MY LORD,—I have the honor to forward, for the
information of your Government, the corrected
position of Point Hanson, Chatham Islands, as ascer-
tained by Mr. Dennys, Navigating Lieutenant of this
ship.

HYDROGRAPHICAL NOTE.
H.M.S. "Sapphire," 17th February, 1877.-Australian Station.
| Position. | Correction is required to | Remarks. |
|---|---|---|
| Admiralty Chart No. | ||
| By observations with artificial horizon for latitude and longitude, I place Point Hanson in Lat. 43° 57′ 24″ S., and Long. 176° 32′ 15" W., being 11' 45" of longitude to the eastward of its position on Chart 1417. This nearly agrees by bearings with the position of Port Hutt, as ascertained by the U.S. Transit of Venus Expedition, December, 1874. The relative position of West Reef and other places to the northward and westward of Waitangi appears to be correct, and the whole island seems to be placed 9 miles to the westward of its true position. | ||
