The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The population has been estimated by adding the excess of births over deaths since the 1st March, 1874, to the then census
population. It is impossible to estimate the increase from immigration.
The births were 37 fewer than in August.
The deaths were 4 fewer in number than the deaths in August.
Of the deaths, males contributed 56; females, 37: 39 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 41.94
per cent. of the whole number; 24 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
There were 10 deaths of persons of 65 years of age and over: 6 of these persons were males and 4 females of these,
1 male aged 85, and 2 females aged 78 and 88, died at Auckland; 1 female aged 65 at the Thames; 2 males aged 65 and 75,
and 1 female aged 69, at Wellington; 1 male aged 84 at Nelson; 1 male aged 82 at Christchurch; and 1 male aged 75 at
Dunedin.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the Month of
September, 1876.
