Altering Boundaries of Resident Magistrates' Dis-
tricts of Christchurch and Timaru, and constituting
District of Ashburton.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by "The Resident Magistrates Act,
1867," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for
the Governor from time to time, by Proclamation in
the New Zealand Gazette, to constitute throughout
the colony, or in any part thereof, districts to be
called Resident Magistrates' Districts, and such
districts from time to time to abolish, and the
boundaries to define and alter, and in any such
Proclamation to fix a time on and from which any
such district shall be constituted or abolished, as
the case may be: And whereas by a Proclamation
bearing date the twenty-ninth day of November, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, His Excel-
lency the Governor, in pursuance and in exercise of
the powers and authorities so vested in him, did
proclaim and constitute the Districts of Christchurch
and Timaru, as described in the Schedule to the
said Proclamation, to be, on and from the first day of
January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight,
Resident Magistrates' Districts within the meaning
and for the purposes of the said Act:

And whereas it is expedient to alter the boundaries
of the said Districts of Christchurch and Timaru so
constituted as aforesaid, and to constitute the District
of Ashburton:

Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the
powers and authorities so vested in me as aforesaid,
do hereby alter the boundaries of the said Districts
of Christchurch and Timaru as described in the
Schedule hereto, as and from the eighteenth day of
October next, and do hereby constitute and proclaim
the Ashburton District, as described in the Schedule
hereto, to be a Resident Magistrate's District as from
the said eighteenth day of October next, for the pur-
poses and within the meaning of the said Act.

SCHEDULE.
CHRISTCHURCH.

This district is bounded towards the North-east
and North by the Kaiapoi District, as defined by a
Proclamation bearing date the twenty-ninth day of
November, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-
seven; towards the East by the sea and the Lyttelton
District, as defined by a Proclamation bearing date
the first day of November, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-one; towards the South-east by
the sea; towards the South-west by the southern
bank of the Rakaia River to its most westerly source,
and a line to the summit of the Southern Alps; and
towards the North-west by right lines from peak to
peak along the summit of the Southern Alps to the
source of the Waimakiriri River.

ASHBURTON.

This district is bounded towards the North-east by
the south bank of the Rakaia River, from its most
westerly source to its mouth; thence towards the
south-east by the ocean to the mouth of the Rangi-
tata River; thence towards the South-west by the
north bank of the said Rangitata River, and a line to
the summit of Mount Tyndall; and thence towards
the North-west by right lines from peak to peak
along the summit of the said Southern Alps to the
commencing point.

TIMARU.

This district is bounded towards the North-east by
the Ashburton District, hereinbefore defined; towards
the East by the sea; towards the South by the
southern boundary of the Province of Canterbury
from the mouth of the Waitangi River to Mount
Aspiring; and thence towards the North-west by the
summit of the main range of the Southern Alps to
the western angle of the Ashburton District afore-
said.
