NOTES FOR JUNE, 1876.
Mongonui.—Unsettled weather, rain over the average; the maximum fall recorded on 8th, 3.07 in.; strong wind prevailed from
westward; thunder on 8th, 9th, and 11th; fog on 17th. Maximum temperature in shade, 71°; minimum, 33°.
Auckland.—Showery; strong wind on 9th from E., and on 16th from W.; on 23rd and 24th, strong N.E. gale of short duration,
with rain; hail on night of 11th, also thunder; prevailing westerly winds; maximum rain recorded on 23rd, 880 in.
Maximum temperature in shade, 66°; minimum, 39.4°.
Taranaki.—Wet weather generally; very heavy fall recorded on 18th, 3.75 in.; very strong westerly gale on 23rd and 24th,
with rain; thunder on 23rd; prevailing westerly winds. Maximum temperature in shade, 64°; minimum, 32°.
Napier.—Changeable weather, with some fine days and frosty nights; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 76 in.; prevailing winds
W. and S.W., and moderate on the whole. Maximum temperature in shade, 69°; minimum, 35°.
Wellington.—Cold unpleasant showery weather generally; prevailing N.W. wind and stormy on 14th, 15th, and 23rd, frequent
squalls; a few fine pleasant days at commencement and end of month; on 22nd, barometer, which stood at 29.845, com-
menced falling, heavy rain and strong N.W. wind at night; on morning of 23rd, barometer 28.982, dark heavy clouds to
N.W., showers and strong wind, barometer down to 28.89 at 3 p.m., continued wet; in night changed to S.W., and
barometer rose, reading 29.431 on morning of 24th, rising steadily until it reached 30.560 on 28th; 80 in rain recorded on
23rd, and 1.15 in. on 24th, the maximum fall for the month; fine, pleasant bright N.W. weather from 25th to 29th, frosty
nights; on 30th cold and wet from N.W., changing to S.E., with heavy rain in night; 2.65 in. rain recorded on 1st of
following month for previous 24 hours; snow on hills; fog on 2nd. Maximum temperature in shade, 60.8°; minimum, 33.9°.
Wanganui.—Fine for time of year; greatest rain recorded on 19th, 70 in.; prevailing N.W. winds and generally strong; very
stormy on 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th, for that quarter, with rain; thunder on 23rd. Maximum temperature in shade, 63°;
minimum, 30°.
Nelson.—The total rainfall very heavy, although few wet days; the maximum fall registered on 23rd, 4.13 in., strong wind from
N.E.; continued to 24th, with heavy rain; stormy weather generally, wind changeable. Maximum temperature in shade,
63°; minimum, 32°.
Cape Campbell.—Unpleasant weather, with strong westerly winds. Maximum temperature in shade, 67°; minimum, 42°.
Christchurch.—Up to 11th, dull cold wintry weather; wind, N.E. and S.W., rain with latter winds; 12th to 14th very warm,
wind N.W.; variable to 22nd; on 23rd, barometer fell from 29.72 to 28.85, with rain, but storm passed over; 25th to end,
fine weather, hard frosts in mornings; prevailing S.W. winds, generally moderate; strong, however, on 24th; snow on 7th;
maximum rain recorded on 23rd, 60 in. Maximum temperature in shade, 68.4°; minimum, 24.6°.
Bealey.—Calm weather, sharp frosts; excessive rainfall, the maximum recorded on 18th, 2.920 in.; snow fell on eight days;
thunder on 14th; six days of fog; strong westerly winds on 18th, 14th, and 20th; prevailing westerly winds. Maximum
temperature in shade, 51.0°; minimum, 4.8°.
Hokitika.—Generally wet unpleasant weather; prevailing E. wind; strong S.W. gales on 14th and 17th, with rain, and on 22nd
and 23rd from E., the barometer falling to 28.548; thunder on 14th and 17th; hail on 3rd, 17th, and 18th. Maximum
temperature in shade, 58.7°; minimum, 30.9°.
Dunedin.—Showery cold weather generally; heavy rainfall on 23rd and 24th; 3.10 in. recorded on 23rd; wind S.W.; also
strong wind on 17th and 19th from same quarter; westerly winds prevailed. Maximum temperature in shade, 59°;
minimum, 31°.
Queenstown.—Very wet weather; hard frosts and snow on 5th, 16th, and 17th; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 98 in.;
prevailing N.W. winds, and often strong during nights; thunder on 4th; fog on five days. Maximum temperature in
shade, 62.7°; minimum, 25.2°.
Southland.—A very wet month, especially from 15th to 25th; the maximum fall of rain recorded on 23rd, 1.32 in.; thunder on
18th; hail on 16th and 19th; prevailing winds from N.E. and N.W.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Wet unpleasant weather generally throughout; rain greatly in excess at most of the Southern Stations. A severe westerly
gale passed over the islands on 23rd and 24th, the barometer falling in some places to 28.548. Thunder and hail frequently
occurred, and some hard frosts, also snow. Earthquake reported by Observer at Wellington on 28th, at 6.32 p.m., slight.
