Districts of Lyell, Inangahua, and Town of Reefton,
vice C. Broad, Esq., R.M. These appointments date
from the 29th ultimo.

Instructions from Board of Trade relative to particu-
lars to be registered by Captain of a Ship concern-
ing Births and Deaths at Sea.

instructions to officers in British possessions
abroad relative to certain provisions of "The Births
and Deaths Registration Act, 1874," is published
for general information.

INSTRUCTIONS TO OFFICERS IN BRITISH
POSSESSIONS ABROAD.

BIRTHS AND DEATHS REGISTRATION ACT, 1874.
Section 54 with Schedule of 37 and 38 Vict. c. 88,
(Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1874,) which
came into operation on 1st January, 1875, repeals
sections 273 and 282 of "The Merchant Shipping
Act, 1854," so far as they relate to the entry of any
birth or death. It also repeals section 16 of "The
Passengers Act, 1855," from "and the said Master
shall note in writing" down to "An Act for regis-
tering Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England,"
and section 100 of the same Act from "such Emigra-
tion or Customs Officer" to the end of the section,
which sections thus repealed provided for the inser-
tion of particulars of births and deaths in the pas-
senger lists and their transmission to the Registrar-
General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages.
Section 54 and Schedule are reprinted, and the
sections thus affected are annexed in extenso, the
portions repealed being shown by italics.
Section 37 (1) of the same Act provides for the
