THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

During 1875, 88 persons died in these boroughs at the age of 65 and upwards, of whom 24 are returned
as having died of old age, the largest number (28) having been in Auckland, and the next largest (17) in
Wellington. There were 16 in Dunedin, 15 in Nelson, and 9 in Christchurch.
The violent deaths were 79 in 1875, against 55 in 1874. Of these deaths in 1875, 7 were homicides,
and 7 suicides.

NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1875.

Mongonui. Very unsettled weather, though not much rain, the maximum recorded on 16th, 37 in.; prevailing westerly winds,
and frequently strong; thunder on 26th and 27th; lightning without thunder on 4th. Maximum temperature in shade,
78°; minimum, 43°.

Auckland. Wet unpleasant weather; maximum rain recorded on 18th, 820 in.; prevailing westerly winds; stormy from 4th
to 6th from that quarter, also on 9th and 21st; thunder occurred on 4th, 5th, 18th, 26th, and 29th, lightning causing
damage; hail on 21st and 29th; fog on 17th, evening. Maximum temperature in shade, 71.7°; minimum, 45.8°.

Taranaki. A foggy, squally, and stormy month, also rain in excess, the maximum recorded on 16th, 1.16 in.; westerly winds
prevailed, especially strong on 4th, 24th, and 26th, with rain; hail on 4th; thunder on 26th. Maximum temperature in
shade, 70°; minimum, 40°.

Napier. Unsettled and showery, with occasional fine days; wind prevailed from W., and at times strong; maximum rain
recorded on 1st, 1.04 in. Maximum temperature in shade, 85°; minimum, 43°.

Wellington. A very wet month; rain fell greatly in excess of same month in previous years; the greatest fall recorded on 27th,
2.450 in.; prevailing N.W. winds, and frequently strong; on 1st and 2nd strong from S.E. with heavy rain; on 7th and
8th strong from N.W., also on 13th, 14th, 25th and 26th, the last two days with heavy rain. Very low barometer almost
throughout, temperature also low. Maximum temperature in shade, 66.3°; minimum, 43.3°.

Wanganui.-Wet, squally weather generally; maximum rain registered on 1st, 1.07 in.; wind prevailed from N.W., and often
strong, especialy on 1st, 4th, 5th, and 25th from N.W., and on 29th and 30th from S.E.; thunder on 3rd and 24th. Maxi-
mum temperature in shade, 75°; minimum, 40°.

Nelson. Unpleasant, wet weather, with strong winds prevailing from W.; maximum rainfall recorded on 21st, 1.140 in. Maxi-
mum temperature in the shade, 70°; minimum, 39°.

Cape Campbell.--Strong N.W. winds and cloudy weather prevailed, with a good deal of rain; the maximum fall recorded on 21st
79 in. Maximum temperature in shade, 72·1°; minimum, 46.5°.

Christchurch. A few fine days in middle of month, otherwise the weather was wet and unpleasant, with prevailing S.W. wind;
maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, 1.500 in.; sleet fell on 28th. Maximum temperature in shade, 77.5°; minimum, 32.8°.

Bealey. Very wet, stormy, unpleasant month; wind N.W. generally; maximum rainfall registered on 23rd, 2-200 in.; thunder
on 19th and 22nd; snow on 25th and 26th. Maximum temperature in shade, 69°; minimum, 31°.

Hokitika. Wet and unpleasant generally; prevailing N.E. and W. winds, and often strong and squally; maximum rain
recorded on 23rd, 1.75 in.; thunder on 1st, 20th, and 23rd. Maximum temperature in shade, 63.6°; minimum, 40.0°.

Dunedin.-Very wet weather, except from 10th to 17th; maximum rainfall registered on 23rd, 1.750 in.; prevailing N.E. and
southerly winds; strong from S.W. on 24th. Maximum temperature in shade, 71°; minimum, 39°.

Queenstown.-Cold unseasonable weather; frequent rain, the maximum recorded on 23rd, 1.81 in.; westerly winds prevailed;
strong on 24th; snow on 22nd and 23rd. Maximum temperature in shade, 73.3°; minimum, 35.6°.

Southland. A wet, boisterous month; heavy clouds; maximum rain recorded on 23rd, 1.40 in.; prevailing winds from S.W.,
very strong on 14th and 15th; frosty on 2nd and 29th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

A severe, wet, and stormy month for time of year; rain very much in excess; temperature below the average, and low
barometer readings. Wind prevailed from the westward generally, and gales were of frequent occurrence, accompanied often
with thunder and lightning.
