General Total 1,885

The births in the boroughs increased from 3,260 in 1874 to 3,407 in 1875, an increase of 147. During
the same period the deaths increased from 1,374 to 1,885, an increase of 511. Thus, while the births only
increased at the rate of 4.5 per cent., the deaths increased at the rate of 37.2 per cent.
The rates of increase of deaths were far from uniform in the different boroughs, and not contingent
upon a proportionate increase in the number of births: thus, in Auckland the births decreased 14.2 per
cent., and the deaths increased 126.1 per cent.; in Wellington the births increased 21.9 per cent., and the
deaths 7.5 per cent.
