NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1874.

Mongonui. Fine weather to 6th; thunder on 7th; rain came on in afternoon and continued till morning of 8th, 2.24 inches
falling, the maximum for month; dry during latter part of month; winds changeable, and very strong at times; N.W. gale
on 11th. Maximum temperature in shade, 75°; minimum, 47°.

Auckland. Unpleasant and wet up to 14th, after which tolerably fine though showery; maximum rain on 11th, 900 inch;
wind prevailed from N.E., and strong occasionally; thunder on 3rd and 12th; hail on 12th and 26th. Maximum tempera-
ture, 73.9°; minimum, 45.6°.

Taranaki. Generally fine and pleasant, though showery; maximum rain on 11th, 1.79 inch; light westerly winds prevailed.
Maximum temperature, 75°; minimum, 39°.

Napier. Fine pleasant weather, occasional showers; the greatest rain recorded on 12th, 26 inch; prevailing N.E. winds and
at times fresh; thunder on 2nd, 12th, and 23rd; hail on 26th. Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 40°.

Wellington. Very fine bright clear weather during the month, with little rain; the maximum fall recorded on the 11th, 700
inch for previous twenty-four hours; prevailing wind from N.W. and frequently strong, especially on 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th;
lightning on night of 2nd; lightning and loud thunder on 23rd, and on 24th with rain; fog on 14th. Maximum tempera-
ture in shade, 74.3°; minimum, 42°.

Wanganui. Early part strong driving westerly winds prevailed, after which fine to end of month except a few wet days; on
25th, 1.53 inch rain recorded, the maximum; prevailing N.W. winds; thunder 23rd; hail 24th. Maximum temperature,
76°; minimum, 39°.

Nelson. Beginning and middle of month fresh westerly and northerly winds; on night of 10th very heavy rain, with light N.E.
weather, 2.54 inches recorded; on night of 19th stiff northerly breeze; fine remainder of month. Maximum temperature,
79°; minimum, 37°.

Cape Campbell. Dry weather, with strong N.W. winds; sky generally overcast; only three days' rain, the maximum fall being
67 inch on 11th. Maximum temperature, 79°; minimum, 49°.

Christchurch. Fine pleasant weather throughout; the greatest fall of rain recorded on 25th, 42 inch; prevailing N.E. wind;
thunder on 2nd and 8th; hail on 8th. Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 43.6°.

Bealey. Wet showery weather during early and towards latter part of month; the remainder, fine warm weather; prevailing
N.W. wind, and very strong; maximum rainfall on 23rd, 1.83 inch; thunder on 5th, 6th, and 7th; snow on 24th; hail on
5th and 6th. Maximum temperature, 79.4°; minimum, 30°.

Hokitika. Unpleasant weather till middle of month, when it broke and was fine for some time; latter part showery; maximum
rain, 1.75 inch on 4th; prevailing northerly winds and moderate, except on 6th, 8th, and 23rd, when it blew hard; thunder
on 8th and 23d; hail on 25th. Maximum temperature, 67°; minimum, 39.4°.

Dunedin. Showery except towards end of month; winds changeable; maximum rain on 24th, 350 inch; thunder on 8th and
23rd; hail on 8th and 23rd. Maximum temperature, 71°; minimum, 37°.

Queenstown. Cold and wet during first part of month, unusual for time of year; fine in middle, but changeable towards end of
month; maximum rain recorded on 1st, 1.39 inch; prevailing N.W. winds and moderate; thunder on 1st and 5th; snow
on 3rd, 6th, and 24th; hail on 24th. Maximum temperature, 77.9°; minimum, 36.2°.

Southland. Cloudy, squally, and showery weather generally; rather small rainfall; the maximum recorded on 26th, 34 inch;
wind prevailed from S.W., and frequently strong; thunder on 23rd; hail on 11th, 12th, and 25th. Maximum temperature,
75°; minimum, 30°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The weather during this month was, on the whole, fine and seasonable; rainfall moderate, and at some stations very slight;
temperature about the average; no gales of any note occurred. Earthquakes reported at Napier on 14th, at 1.30 p.m., slight;
at Cape Campbell on 27th, at 9.30 p.m., slight.
