THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
The number of deaths for the month of October compared with September showed a slight increase. While the deaths
from Zymotic diseases showed a decrease of 9, and those from Constitutional diseases a decrease of 10, the violent deaths
increased in number from 7 to 17. Of the Miasmatic diseases, there was only 1 death from typhoid fever, against 8 in
September; and none from measles, against 3 in September.
Of the deaths from local diseases, the number from diseases of the respiratory organs was the same as in September.
Ten out of 18 deaths from developmental diseases were from atrophy and debility.
Of violent deaths, one was that of a child accidentally run over. The case of "justifiable homicide" was that of a convict
shot by a gaol warder.
Eleven deaths were caused by accident or negligence.
In October, 1874, the deaths for the 7 boroughs amounted to 130. There were 30 deaths from Zymotic disease against 25 in
October of this year. The large number in October, 1874, was principally owing to the prevalence of measles at that time.
