NOTES FOR JULY, 1875.
Mongonui.—Unsettled weather; tolerably fine middle of month, but otherwise showery; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th,
1.82 inch; strong westerly winds prevailed on the 5th, very violent for a short time; thunder on 1st and 7th. Maximum
temperature in shade, 68°; minimum, 37°.
Auckland.—Showery and squally weather, with prevailing S.W. and W. winds; fierce S.W. gale on night of 4th; 1212 miles
recorded on 5th, also strong on 13th; thunder on 1st; fog on 30th; maximum rainfall recorded on 30th, 990 inch.
Maximum temperature in shade, 65.1°; minimum, 37·1°.
Taranaki.—Unsettled wet weather; maximum rainfall on 27th, 1.52 inches; prevailing wind westerly; stormy on 27th.
Maximum temperature in shade, 61.0°; minimum, 32°.
Napier.—Showery unpleasant weather, but rainfall below average; maximum fall recorded on 5th, 46 inch; wind moderate and
variable; hail on 13th. Maximum temperature in shade, 65°; minimum, 33.0°.
Wellington.—Very wet, squally, and unpleasant during the month, with short intervals of bright weather; the total rainfall in
excess of previous years; the maximum recorded on the 5th, 2550 inch; also heavy rain fell on the 19th, from N.W.;
2.00 inch registered on 20th; prevailing N.W. and S.E. winds; very strong on 1st, 4th, and 11th, from S.E., and on 12th
and 14th from S.W.; also on 30th and 31st from N.W.; hail on 12th; fog on 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 25th, and 26th; very cold
and severe at times. Maximum temperature in shade, 60.0°; minimum, 34.3.°
Wanganui.—Dull showery weather generally; maximum rainfall registered on 5th, 800 inch; prevailing N.W. wind, and
frequently strong; some pleasant days. Maximum temperature in shade, 63°; minimum, 28°.
Nelson.—First part fine and pleasant; middle and latter part dull cloudy weather, with drizzling rain; maximum fall recorded
on 20th, 2-23 inch; prevailing N.E. and S.E. winds; very strong on 30th and 31st, with rain. Maximum temperature in
shade, 61°; minimum, 31°.
Cape Campbell.—Changeable throughout; prevailing N.W. winds, and at times strong; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th,
68 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 67·1°; minimum, 41.5°.
Christchurch.—Rather dull, but small rainfall, and moderate wind prevailing from S.W.; snow on 2nd. Maximum temperature
in shade, 62-4°; minimum, 28.5°
Bealey.—Tolerably fine and very mild on the whole; snow fell on five days only; fog on four days; westerly wind prevailed, and
strong on 11th, 12th, 16th, 18th, and 30th. Maximum temperature in shade, 52°; minimum, 19.4°.
Hokitika.—Showery weather generally, with prevailing easterly winds; on 11th and 12th, severe gale from S.W. with rain, wind
instrument blown away, registered 1052 miles on 12th; maximum rain recorded on 17th, 2.75 inch. Maximum tempera-
ture in shade, 57.9°; minimum, 30·4°.
Dunedin.—Showery with high winds prevailing from S.W.; very strong gale from that quarter on 6th; sharp frost on 26th;
small total rainfall; maximum fall recorded on 12th, 340 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 57°; minimum, 32%.
Southland.—Very wet from 5th to 14th, and again from 21st to 24th, wind westerly, from which quarter it prevailed; a violent
gale from midnight to daylight on 12th from S.W., continued stormy to 14th; maximum rainfall recorded on 6th, 68 inch;
hail on five days.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Generally dull showery weather during this month, with westerly winds, often stormy; severe gales occurred at Auckland
on 4th from S.W., and at Hokitika on 11th and 12th, from same quarter. Earthquakes reported by observers at Wanganui on
4th at 2 a.m., rather heavy; and Southland on 23rd, at 4.15 a.m., sharp. By telegraph on 4th, Wanganui, as above; and on
23rd at Queenstown, at 4.15 a.m.; Invercargill and Riverton, at 4.30 a.m., smart shock, with noise.
