NOTES FOR JUNE, 1875.
Mongonui.—Fine to the 9th; from 10th to 13th strong gales from East, and rain; the maximum rainfall recorded on 12th, 5.66
inch; from 14th to 29th, fine westerly weather; fog on 18th; on 30th a N.E. gale and rain; prevailing westerly winds.
Maximum temperature in shade, 49°; minimum, 41°.
Auckland.—Showery and dull, with intervals of bright clear weather; prevailing westerly winds, and strong on 20th from S.W.;
the maximum rainfall recorded on 12th, 1.620 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 64·9°; minimum, 39.5°.
Taranaki.—Wet and unpleasant, with a few fine days; maximum rain registered on 18th, 2·07 inches; thunder on 16th and
18th; hail on 5th and 16th, wind prevailed from S.E. Maximum temperature in shade, 64°; minimum, 33°.
Napier.—Very wet and unsettled weather; the greatest fall of rain recorded on 20th, 3·03 inch; prevailing southerly winds, and
strong on 7th and 20th; fog on 29th and 30th. Maximum temperature in shade, 70°; minimum, 34°.
Wellington.—On the whole, wet unpleasant weather; rain very frequent, though the total fall is under the average. The mean
degree of moisture is considerably higher than usual. The maximum rainfall was recorded on 13th, 1.05 inch; wind pre-
vailed from N.W. and S.E., and often strong. On 5th strong wind from S.E.; barometer fell from 30-017 to 29.559;
during the night changed to S.W. and blew hard and very cold. Continued on 6th, severe weather. Wet and unpleasant
on 12th, from S.E. heavy rain; on 13th strong N.W. at night, but mild; continued stormy on 14th, no rain. Fine on 29th,
but barometer falling, and threatening afternoon; heavy rain in night, N.W., mild, and continued rain on 30th, barometer
still falling (29-174 inch), in night wind shifted to S.E., and heavy rain and cold; barometer rather higher towards morning
of 1st July (29-496), but S.E. gale set in with rain, very cold wind. Some fine days and bright nights occurred during the
month, but heavy dews fell in nights. The maximum temperature in shade was 61.0°; minimum, 36°.
Wanganui.—A good deal of rain fell during the month, but some fine bright weather occurred; the maximum rainfall was
recorded on 6th, 1.90 inch; the wind prevailed from N.W. and strong on 30th; frequent calms. Maximum temperature
in shade, 66°; minimum, 30°
Nelson.—A heavy total rainfall, although only seven wet days, the maximum recorded on 30th, 3-53 inch; fine weather was
experienced during greater part of month, with prevailing S.E. winds and generally moderate; strong S.W. gale on morning
of 6th, on the 18th from S.E. strong, and on 30th strong northerly gale, with heavy rain throughout the night; fog on 11th.
The maximum temperature in shade was 68°; minimum 32°.
Cape Campbell.—Strong southerly gales occurred with rain; small total rainfall; the maximum recorded on 20th, 0.64 inch,
for previous twenty-four hours; thunder on 20th; fog on 13th; some pleasant weather occurred. Maximum temperature
in shade, 66.5°; minimum, 42.8°.
Christchurch.—On the 4th a violent gale from S.W. commenced, the barometer falling 326 from 29.858, and heavy rain and wind
continued during the night; on the 5th the gale increased, with heavy rain, the wind blowing down large trees; storm con-
tinued all day, and abated early on the morning of the 6th; the rain registered on the 6th was 3.87 inches, and the velocity
of the wind for the twenty-four hours to morning of 6th was 1319 miles. Great damage was done in the out-districts and
to the shipping; the remainder of month was tolerably fine, with showers at intervals; five days of fog; prevailing S.W.
wind. Maximum temperature in shade, 60.4°; minimum, 28-3°
Bealey.—Tolerably fine but very cold, with sharp frosts; a strong S.W. gale occurred on 4th and 5th, on the latter date at two
p.m., increasing to a hurricane, with heavy rain, lasting till five p.m.; 2.57 inches rain recorded on morning of 6th; a N.W.
gale on 22nd; prevailing N.W. winds, and generally moderate; snow on 5th and 18th; nine foggy days. Maximum
temperature in shade, 58·8° on 30th, during a hot north-wester; minimum, 180°.
Hokitika.—Cold, severe, showery weather; sharp frosts; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 2.50 inch; prevailing easterly winds;
strong gale from E. on 30th, with rain, barometer down to 28-996; hail fell on 22nd; fog on 27th. Maximum temperature
in shade, 60.1°; minimum, 31·1°.
Dunedin.—Changeable weather, though fine at times; maximum rain on 5th, 6·10 inch; prevailing westerly winds; strong wind
on 5th, S.W.; snow on 5th. Maximum temperature in shade, 58°; minimum, 32°.
Southland.—Showery dull weather, with light winds prevailing from N.E. and E.; maximum rain recorded on 30th, 7.70 inch;
severe frosts from 8th to 12th, and from 19th to 25th; very wet during last three days of month; hail on 5th. Maximum
temperature in shade, 64°; minimum, 20°.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Strong south-westerly winds prevailed throughout, with a very heavy rainfall; on the 4th and 5th a very severe gale was
felt at most of the stations, but especially in Canterbury, where the wind and floods caused considerable damage.
