SIR, -I have the honor herewith to enclose Returns showing the results of the University Examinations
held in May last, viz., —

  1. Of Candidates for Scholarships.
  2. Holders of Scholarships awarded 1874.
  3. Undergraduates of the 1st year.
  4. Undergraduates of the 2nd year.
    I venture to request that these returns be published in the Government Gazette, in accordance with the
    practice in former years.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND.
THE following Return shows the results of the University Examinations held in May, 1875:—
1st. Candidates for Scholarships for 1875.
2nd. Holders of Scholarships awarded in 1874.
3rd. Undergraduates of the 1st year.
4th. Undergraduates of the 2nd year.
As regards the candidates for Scholarships, 1875, and holders of Scholarships, 1874, the subjects of
examination are distributed into four groups, viz.,—1. Classics; 2. Mathematics; 3. Physical Science (any
of the following branches:—Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Physical Geography, Zoology, Botany,
Geology); 4. Modern Languages other than English, History, and English Literature.
The maximum of marks in each group of subjects is as follows:—Group No. 1, 1,000; Group No. 2,
1,000; Group No. 3, 500 (in any of the specified branches); Group No. 4, 1,500. No Scholarship is
awarded to any candidate who fails to obtain one-half at least of the above maximum of marks in any
subject, and no holder of a Scholarship is entitled to hold his Scholarship who fails to obtain at least one-
half of the total number of marks allotted to all subjects, viz. 2,000.
As regards the undergraduates of the first and second year, 500 marks has been fixed as the maximum
for each group of subjects.
Every undergraduate is required to take up at least three subjects in different groups, and, in order to
pass, must obtain at least one-third of the maximum in each.
The names in each table hereto appended are arranged in alphabetical order, and the numbers set
opposite to them denote the order of merit in the respective subjects.
