NOTES FOR MARCH, 1875.

Mongonui.—Fine dry weather; the maximum rainfall on 20th, 43 inch; prevailing easterly winds, and strong at times.
Maximum temperature in shade, 83°; minimum, 48°.

Auckland.—Dull cloudy weather, but small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 20th, 19 inch; prevailing S.W. winds, and
strong at times; stormy on 19th from W., and slight rain; fog on 31st. Maximum temperature, 81.9°; minimum, 46.2°.

Taranaki.—On the whole a fine month; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 95 inch; prevailing S.W. winds, strong on 19th.
Maximum temperature, 82°; minimum, 40°.

Napier.—Very dry, rain only on three days, the maximum fall on 18th, 08 inch; winds variable, and occasionally strong;
on night of 16th it blew a gale from W., which lasted about five hours, and on 20th, 21st, and 22nd strong from S.W.
Maximum temperature, 82°; minimum, 41°.

Wellington.—Very bright clear weather, with prevailing N.W. wind, at times strong; rain considerably below average, maximum
fall recorded on 20th, 500 inch; remarkably high barometer on 9th and 10th, accompanied by fine N.W. weather, but
oppressive and hazy; from 19th to 22nd strong N.W. winds with showers, and wet and cold from S.E. on 23rd. Maximum
temperature, 76.0°; minimum, 42.0°.

Wanganui.—Fine generally; small rainfall, the maximum on 20th, 77 inch; prevailing N.W. wind, and strong on 21st and
27th. Maximum temperature, 81°; minimum, 36°.

Nelson.—Tolerably fine during month; heavy rain recorded on 20th, 6.4 inches for previous twenty-four hours, strong N.E. wind;
prevailing N. and S.W winds, and often strong. Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 34°.

Cape Campbell.—Very dry, the maximum rain recorded on 20th, 50 inch; prevailing N.W. wind, and frequently stormy; strong
gale commenced on 19th from S. and S.E., shifting to N.W., with rain, veered to W. by noon of 20th, blowing hard till
22nd, with clear sky; barometer fell from 30.00 on 19th to 29-30 on 20th, rising slowly as wind went round to W.; during
22nd storm abated and wind shifted to S.E., with sharp frost; fog occurred on 10th. Maximum temperature, 79-0°;
minimum, 46°.

Christchurch.—Pleasant weather; maximum rain on 20th, 85 inch; strong variable winds; gale during afternoon of 20th, N.W.;
snow fell on 23rd. Maximum temperature, 80-3°; minimum, 35.8°.

Bealey.—Heavy rainfall during month, the maximum recorded on 5th, 2·370 inches; prevailing N.W. winds, and often strong;
fog on 2nd and 30th; snow on 20th and 23rd; thunder on 20th; hail on 20th. Maximum temperature, 70°3°; minimum,
29.4° in shade.

Hokitika.—Wet unpleasant weather generally; prevailing N., N.E., and S.W. winds, and frequently strong; strong gale from
S.W. on 19th to 21st, with thunder and hail on 19th and heavy rain, 2.89 inches registered on 20th; frequent fogs. Maxi-
mum temperature, 70.6°; minimum, 36·1°.

Dunedin.—Very fine, except from 21st to 24th, when cold westerly winds prevailed, with rain; maximum rainfall recorded on
14th, 680 inch; lightning on 21st. Maximum temperature, 72°; minimum, 35°.

Queenstown.—Very fine, except about middle of month, when it was showery, maximum fall occurring on 4th, 41 inch; winds
moderate, and prevailed from N.W., strong from S.E. on 29th; snow on 20th. Maximum temperature, 74.6°; minimum,
35.3°.

Southland.—Showery weather, though at times fine; warm from 12th to 16th, followed by thunder on 18th; violent thunder
storm on 21st, with rain, wind S.W., also gale from same quarter on 22nd. Maximum temperature, 79°; minimum, 31°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Except at Nelson, Bealey, and Hokitika, the rainfall has been generally under the average, and strong equinoctial gales
occurred between 19th and 24th, with barometer down to 29.1°. High barometer throughout, on the 10th reaching 30-666°,
fine dry weather. Earthquakes reported on the 7th at Foxton, Wanganui, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, and Christchurch
about 5.18 a.m., generally described as sharp; also on the 13th at Wellington at 5.13 p.m., smart. Meteor seen in South on 21st,
direction W. to E.
