NOTES FOR FEBRUARY, 1875.

Mongonui. Remarkably dry weather; the maximum rain on 16th, 22 inch; strong E. wind for few hours on 20th, otherwise
wind light and prevailed from S.E. and E. Maximum temperature in shade, 84°; minimum, 57.0°.

Auckland. Very dry and fine; greatest rain recorded on 5th, 265 inch; wind chiefly from southward and at times strong.
Maximum temperature, 84°; minimum, 53.9°.

Taranaki. Very dry weather, a little rain in middle of month, the maximum fall on the 16th, 54 inch; light winds prevail-
ing from S.E. Maximum temperature, 82°; minimum, 45°.

Napier. Pleasant weather with occasional showers; the maximum rainfall recorded on 4th, 1.74 inch, which fell during night of
3rd, wind S.; winds light and variable. Maximum temperature, 88°; minimum, 47°.

Wellington.--Early part of month very pleasant weather, bright and clear; stormy on 10th, from N.W.; from 15th to 19th
wet; maximum rainfall recorded on 16th, 70 inch; strong N.W. wind on night of 24th; on 27th, squally from S.E., with
rain, cold; prevailing wind from N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 78.5°; minimum, 45.0°.

Wanganui. Heavy rain fell on 17th, 1.13 inch recorded on 18th, otherwise fine warm dry weather; winds prevailed from N.W.
and occasionally strong. Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 45°,

Nelson.-First part of month fine westerly weather; middle and latter part stronger breezes; on 15th, 16th, and 17th strong
wind from N.E. and rain, 3.20 inches recorded on 17th; on night of 27th, strong gale from S.E. Maximum tempera-
ture, 83°; minimum, 42°.

Cape Campbell. Very fine weather, little rain, the maximum recorded on 16th, 60 inch; prevailing N.W. winds and occasional
gales; on 28th strong gale from S. with showers, and very cold; snow on ranges. Maximum temperature, 84.5°;
minimum, 49°.

Christchurch.-Fine generally; occasional showers, the maximum fall on 15th, 73 inch; winds changeable and moderate
except on 3rd, when it blew from N.E. and changed to rain from S.W.; and on 23rd, when a N.W. dry gale occurred.
Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 41.6°.

Bealey. Fine; rain below average, the greatest fall recorded on 25th, 1.600 inch; prevailing N.W. wind, and strong gales on
10th, 18th, and 25th. Maximum temperature, 74.5°; minimum, 40.1°.

Hokitika. Weather about the average for time of year; fine and warm, with heavy rain at times; maximum fall recorded on
17th, 278 inch; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and moderate generally; on 18th and 27th blew strong from S.W.
Maximum temperature, 72.1°; minimum, 44.9°.

Dunedin. Very fine from 1st to 13th; on 14th rain, and continued showery and changeable to end of month; wind from
S.W. generally, and strong on 11th, 18th, and 19th; heavy hail storm on 27th; maximum rain recorded on 24th, 384 inch.
Maximum temperature, 82°; minimum, 38°.

Queenstown. Fine and pleasant, though total rain rather in excess; maximum rain recorded on 24th, 94 inch; prevailing N.W.
and S.W. winds, and moderate; rather cold and stormy towards end of month; snow on hills on 26th. Maximum tempera-
ture, 76.1°; minimum, 37.8°.

Southland. Generally fine, with occasional showers; maximum rain on 19th, 70; westerly wind prevailed, and at times high;
thunder on 19th, and hail on 19th, 27th, and 28th; frequently cold. Maximum temperature, 79°; minimum, 32°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Exceedingly dry weather throughout the colony for this period. Temperature in excess of the average for same month in
previous years; winds moderate and changeable. Aurora visible in South on 27th.
