THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
The deaths from Zymotic Diseases were 83 in February, against 55 in January, and 40 in December, the deaths from
Dysentery and Diarrhœa alone having increased from 29 in January to 53 in February. These deaths occurred as follows:---
In Dunedin, 15; Auckland, 12; Wellington, 9; Nelson, 7; Thames, 5; Christchurch, 4; and Hokitika, 1; 48 of these deaths
were of children under two years of age, the majority being under one year. There is a slight increase in the number of deaths
from Typhoid Fever. The largest number of these deaths occurred in Christchurch (4); two deaths from this cause occurred in
Dunedin. Constitutional and Local Diseases were somewhat less numerous than in January, but Developmental Diseases were
slightly on the increase. There were three cases in which the causes of death were attributed to chronic alcoholism: one a
publican, who died of congestion of the brain; his wife, who died of diseased liver (cirrhosis); and a male who died of diseased
liver.
