Engagement of Foreign Seamen.

Board of Trade, is published for general in-
formation.

NOTICE TO SHIPMASTERS.

Engagement of Foreign Seamen on board British
Ships.

The attention of British Shipmasters and of
Foreign Seamen wishing to ship on board British
vessels is hereby called to the provisions of the laws
of certain countries with regard to military and naval
service, which forbid the engagement of the subjects
of those countries on foreign service unless they are
provided with certificates from the competent autho-
rities to the effect that there is no objection to their
accepting such service.

Masters of British Ships and Seamen being the
subjects of foreign countries are therefore warned
that unless the latter are provided with the certi-
ficates from the authorities above referred to, any
engagements they may make to serve on board
British vessels may be considered illegal according to
the laws of those countries, and that the whole
responsibility and consequences of concluding such
engagements will have to be borne by the parties to
the contract, who must not expect any interference
on their behalf on the part of Her Majesty's Go-
vernment, or of any British Consular Officer.
