NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1873.
Mongonui.—Fine weather, small rainfall, though pleasant showers; heavy on 17th, 1.59 inch, with thunder; prevailing wind
from S.W. and N.W. and moderate; rather stormy on 26th from N.E. Maximum temperature in shade, 78°; minimum,
44°.
Auckland.—Usually fair and pleasant; stiff N.E. breeze on 18th, with 530 inch of rain, the maximum for month; violent
N.E. gale on 26th, with heavy driving showers, 520 miles of wind registered; prevailing S.E. and S.W. wind. Maximum
temperature, 743°; minimum, 44.4°.
Taranaki.—Fine, but very sultry; thunder on 15th, 26th, and 28th; prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds. Maximum rain
recorded on 15th, 71 inch. Maximum temperature, 74°; minimum, 39°.
Napier.—Early part fine, remainder of month wet and disagreeable; maximum fall of rain on 12th, 1.09 inch; thunder on 6th
and 11th; sharp hailstorm on 6th; prevailing winds N.E. Maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 44°.
Wellington.—Generally fine and pleasant weather, though at times wet and cold. On 1st strong N.W. wind, 615 miles recorded
on 2nd, and on 29th stormy from same quarter without rain; wet and unpleasant on 9th and 10th from S.E., and on 13th
wet from N.W.; rainfall below average, maximum recorded on 10th, 930 inch for previous twenty-four hours; prevailing
winds from N.W. and S.E., and on the whole moderate. Maximum temperature in shade, 70°; minimum, 41°.
Wanganui.—Fine genial weather with occasional showers of rain and N.W. breezes, but moderate; thunder-storm on 15th,
clearing the atmosphere; maximum rain on 10th, 50 inch; hail on 4th. Maximum temperature, 74°; mininum 39°.
Nelson.—Pleasant weather, but showery; maximum rainfall on 14th, 1.85 inch; wind generally southerly and moderate;
thunder on 4th, and heavy squall from S.W. with rain; thunder also on 15th. Maximum temperature, 75°; minimum, 39°.
Christchurch.—Small rainfall, but frequent showers; pleasant weather on the whole; gale on night of 4th from S.W. with rain
and hail; thunder on 18th; winds prevailed from S.W. and moderate; maximum rainfall on 28th, 67 inch. Maximum
temperature, 78.5°; minimum, 39.50.
Bealey.—Tolerably fine warm weather; heavy rain at times; the maximum recorded on 14th, 2.250 inches; prevailing N.W.
wind; stormy on 1st and 2nd, with rain; thunder on 3rd, 22nd, and 28th; snow on 19th. Maximum temperature, 60°;
minimum, 30-6° in shade.
Hokitika.—Tolerably fine; rainfall about the average; maximum on the 14th, 3-62 inches; prevailing S.W. wind, and at times
stormy; thunder on 14th and 28th some very pleasant weather. Maximum temperature, 72·6°; minimum, 43-8°.
Dunedin.—Weather changeable, showery, and cold; high winds from 1st to 5th, westerly; and on 19th, 20th, and 30th, strong
from same quarter; thunder on 29th; maximum rainfall on 4th, 1.032 inch. Maximum temperature, 67°; minimum, 38°.
Queenstown.—Weather throughout pleasant, with occasional showers; during latter part, cold nights succeeded by warm days;
maximum rain recorded on 30th, 41 inch; wind prevailed from N.W., very moderate. Maximum temperature, 72-6°;
minimum, 38.7°.
Southland.—Fine generally, but cold and ungenial at times, with showers and wind prevailing from S.W.; on 2nd blew a gale
from N.W., otherwise wind moderate; thunder on 3rd and 18th; hail on 4th and 30th; maximum rain on 20th, 66 inch.
Maximum temperature, 72°; minimum, 52°.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Nothing remarkable occurred in the weather during this month; it has been generally fine, pleasant, and seasonable, with a
fair amount of rain; no storms of any note took place; but thunder was in some parts frequent. Earthquakes reported at
Wellington on 2nd, at 2.30 p.m., slight; and at Havelock on same date, at 2.10 p.m., slight; also at Havelock on 14th, at
9.50 a.m., slight.
