NOTES FOR JUNE, 1874.

Mongonui. Wet, unsettled weather; maximum fall of rain on 26th, 1.95 inch for previous twenty-four hours; wind prevailed
from N.W., and strong on 1st, 10th, 15th, and 18th, but otherwise moderate; thunder on 17th, 18th, and 26th; lightning,
without thunder, on 19th and 20th; fog on 5th. Maximum temperature in shade, 68°; minimum, 40°.

Auckland. Stormy and wet throughout the month; wind prevailed from N.E., and at times very strong; maximum rain
recorded on 16th, 795 inch; thunder, 18th and 24th; heavy rain during night of 24th. Maximum temperature, 64.5°;
minimum, 38°.

Taranaki. Generally, dull showery weather, but not very severe for time of year; maximum fall of rain on 15th, 1.19 inch;
twenty days of S.E. wind, and at times strong, especially on 12th, 20th, and 21st; thunder on 23rd. Maximum temperature,
63°; minimum, 35°.

Napier. Very wet and unpleasant; rain considerably above the average, the maximum fall recorded on 27th, 2.14 inches;
wind generally from the south, and moderate; fog on 8th. Maximum temperature, 66°; minimum, 32°.

Wellington. Unusually wet, stormy, and severe weather throughout the month; total rainfall considerably above the average; only
five days without rain, the maximum recorded on 11th, 2 inches, and on 12th, 1.12 inch registered for previous twenty-
four hours. Very strong gale from S.E. at this time, also on 15th, 16th, and 19th, from same quarter, with rain; prevailing
S.E. wind; foggy on 14th and 15th Maximum temperature in shade, 59°; minimum, 38°.

Wanganui. Dull, wet, threatening weather, with an occasional fine day; maximum rainfall on 1st, 75 inch; strong gale on
26th, 27th, and 28th from S.E., with slight rain; prevailing winds from N.W. and S.E. Maximum temperature, 64°;
minimum, 32°.

Nelson. Fine weather generally, but at times very heavy rain, the maximum fall registered on 11th, 1.8 inch; prevailing S.E.
winds, and moderate; on 18th and 19th, strong easterly gale, without rain; fog on 23rd and 24th. Maximum temperature,
62°; minimum, 32°.

Cape Campbell. Fine up to 9th, but during remainder of month very wet, with heavy gales from S. and S.E., the wind recorded
on 11th, 12th, and 20th for previous twenty-four hours being 1,086, 1,134, and 1,013 miles from this quarter; the maximum
rainfall was recorded on 11th, 6'12 inches in the twenty-four hours. Maximum temperature, 59.4°; minimum, 40°.

Christchurch. Cold weather, with sharp frosts, and showery, but, on the whole, fine for the time of year; maximum rainfall on
19th, 63 for previous twenty-four hours; prevailing S. W. winds, but light. Maximum temperature, 59.5°; minimum, 26.9°
in shade.

Bealey. Very cold severe weather, but rain below average, the maximum being 1-60 inch recorded on 23rd; prevailing
southerly winds, and light; snow on 1st and 15th, 8 inches falling in last date; six days of fog; hot wind blew on evening
of 7th, and maximum temperature was recorded on 8th in consequence, 52°; minimum on 18th, 7.6° in shade.

Hokitika. Rainfall below the average, though at times heavy showers: the maximum recorded on 15th and 23rd, 1.37 inch;
winds generally easterly and moderate; frequent frosts; some fine bright days. Maximum temperature, 58.7°; minimum,
29.7° in shade.

Dunedin. Dry, agreeable weather, with a few light showers; maximum fall recorded on 16th, 222 inch; clear and frosty
during middle of month; stormy on 1st from S.W., but otherwise winds moderate and prevailed from S.W. and W.; snow
on 1st; fog on 25th. Maximum temperature, 58°; minimum, 31° in shade.

Southland. Cold severe frosty weather and frequently showery, though total fall under the average; the maximum fall recorded
on 10th, 78 inch; winds chiefly from N.E. and moderate; thunder, snow, and hail on 1st. Maximum temperature, 62°;
minimum, 180° in shade.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The rainfall for the whole Colony for this month is rather less than the average for previous years, but at most of the
stations in the North Island the fall has been in excess, while in the South, and on west coast of Middle Island, it is considerably
under the average. No very severe gales are reported except at Cape Campbell, but the weather in the South has been severe,
frost and snow often occurring. Earthquakes were felt at Christchurch on 6th, at 8:45 a.m., slight, but smart at Lyttelton; also
felt at Kowai Pass. At Rotorua several shakes were felt on 9th; at Riverton, Bluff, and Dunedin on 20th, about 6 a.m., sharp;
at Wanganui on 23rd, at 11:30 p.m., slight.
