Purchase of Horses by the Indian Government.

THE following notification received from the
Government of India, in reference to the pur-
chase of remounts for the Bengal Army, is published
for general information.

SIR,-I am desired by the Right Honorable the
Governor-General of India in Council to forward,
for general information, the accompanying notice re-
garding the purchase of remounts required for the
Bengal Army, and to request that, under the orders
of His Excellency the Governor, it may be published
in the leading journals, and circulated as extensively
as possible.

NOTICE.

In continuation of the notification by the Govern-
ment of India, dated 4th February, 1873, notice is
hereby given that remount agents or committees at
the several stations noted in the margin* are pre-
pared to purchase about 1,000 horses suitable for
army purposes, during the current year, and up to
the 1st April, 1875.

In 1875-76, 650 horses, more or less, will be
bought.

Except under very exceptional circumstances, pur-
chases will be made only between the 1st October
and 1st April.

The requirements of subsequent years will be made
known hereafter.

Horses of all breeds, Cape, Australian, Arab,
Persian, country bred and northern, will be accepted
if up to the required standard. Mares as well as
horses will be taken, and if the former are of a good
stamp, the preference will be given to them.

  • Calcutta, Allahabad, Cawnpore, Lucknow, Agra, Morar,
    Meerut, Bareilly, Umballa, Lahore, Mooltan, Sealkote, Rawul
    Pindee, Peshawur.

They must be within the prescribed ages, four to
seven years.

The standard price for Cavalry and Field Artillery
remounts is Rupees 500; for Horse Artillery, Rupees
600. Every horse presented for purchase will be
separately valued, and in special cases higher prices
than the standard price may be given, provided the
average of the purchases does not exceed the above
limits.

No exhibition of horses will be held in Calcutta in
the ensuing cold season, but prizes for the best horses
and mares for stud and army purposes will be awarded
at several up-country stations, the details of which
will be published shortly.

Council, and assented to by the Superintendent
of Taranaki on behalf of the Governor, intituled

"The Educational Ordinance, 1874," and
"The Supplementary Appropriation Ordinance,
1874,"

having been laid before the Governor, His Excellency
has not been advised to exercise his power of dis-
allowance in respect of the same.

THE following Act, passed by the Provincial
Council, reserved by the Superintendent of
Auckland for the signification of the Governor's
pleasure thereon, intituled

"The Education Act 1872 Amendment Act,
1874,"

having been laid before the Governor, His Excellency
has been pleased to assent to the same.
