NOTES FOR APRIL, 1874.

Mongonui.--Remarkably fine and dry month; heavy rain on night of 28th, with thunder-1.32 inch fell; prevailing easterly winds
and light. Maximum temperature in shade, 81°; minimum, 48°.
Auckland.--Fine weather; slight rainfall, the maximum being 43 on 29th; prevailing southerly winds and moderate. Maximum
temperature, 79°; minimum, 42°.
Taranaki.--A very fine pleasant month, with moderate easterly winds prevailing; a few pleasant showers; maximum rain recorded
on 20th, 28 inch. Maximum temperature, 75°; minimum, 36°.
Napier.--Generally fine and cold, with occasional showery days; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 31 inch; prevailing N. and
S.W. winds and moderate; maximum temperature, 80°; minimum, 38°.
Wellington.--Very small total rainfall, although often showery; the maximum fall occurred on the 5th, 230; prevailing N.W.
and S.E. winds, and frequently very stormy; on the 4th, 5th, and 6th, a severe gale occurred from N.W. with rain, at times
most violent gusts; on 7th, sudden and severe squall from S.E., lasting only fifteen minutes, then lulled; on night of 14th,
strong wind from N.W. and rain; and on 20th and 21st, very stormy from same quarter, and slight rain; on 16th, a sudden
squall of hail and rain occurred from S.E., about 7 p.m.; fine after; some very fine bright pleasant weather during the
month. Maximum temperature in shade, 67.3°; minimum, 40°.
Wanganui.--Fine, with variable winds and light, except on 16th and 17th, when it blew strong from N.W. and rain; maximum
rainfall occurred on 15th, 25 inch. Maximum temperature, 74°; minimum, 34°.
Nelson.--Very small rainfall, and generally light variable winds; the greatest rainfall was recorded on 11th, 37 inch.
Maximum temperature, 75°; minimum, 34°.
Cape Campbell.--Remarkably small rainfall, the maximum only 08 inch on 9th and 13th; but strong winds, frequently
increasing to gales, throughout the month, chiefly from N.W. Maximum temperature, 74.5°; minimum, 45°.
Christchurch.--Only two days of rain, the greatest fall being 08 on 11th; winds chiefly from N.E. and S.W. and light, except
on 7th and 10th, when there was a gale from S.W., and on 22nd from N.W.; fog on 29th. Maximum temperature, 81.6;
minimum, 30-6°.
Bealey.--Pleasant, but showery, large rainfall; very heavy fall recorded on 6th for previous twenty-four hours, 7.66 inches, heaviest
fall registered at this station; on 3rd, 4th, 5th, high N.W. wind; also strong on 21st and 24th from same quarter, with rain;
twenty-one days of N.W. wind; fog on 27th, 28th, and 29th. Maximum temperature, 64'4°; minimum, 27-4° in shade.
Hokitika.--Very unpleasant wet month, with prevailing easterly winds, at times stormy; very heavy rain recorded on 6th, 3.90
inches; thunder on 16th and 22nd; fine towards end of month. Maximum temperature, 64-5°; minimum, 35.5°.
Queenstown.--Unusually fine during month; prevailing N.W. wind and moderate; maximum rainfall recorded on 15th, 64
inch; sudden squalls from S.W. on 14th and 15th, succeeded by rain, thunder, and snow; also snow on 21st; foggy on 28th,
29th, and 30th. Maximum temperature, 70-2°; minimum, 32.6°.
Dunedin.--Fine on whole, but frequently cold and squally; prevailing westerly winds; maximum rainfall recorded on 22nd, 32
inch; snow fell on 15th. Maximum temperature, 74°; minimum, 34°.
Southland.--Rather a rough, stormy month, with W. and N.W. winds; constant rain; the maximum fall recorded on 16th, 84 inch;
on 15th it blew a gale day and night, with severe thunder and vivid lightning, also hail and rain; hail also on 17th, 22nd,
and 23rd. Maximum temperature, 71°; minimum, 29°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The most remarkable feature in the weather during this month is the unusually small rainfall at all the stations in the
Colony, except those on the West Coast of the South Island, at Bealey, and in the extreme South, where the rain has been
excessive. At most of the stations the weather has been exceedingly fine and pleasant; slight shock of earthquake reported at
Mana Lighthouse on the 24th, at 11 p.m. Meteor observed at Wanganui on 1st, at 7.30 p.m.
