N.B. The Auckland Hospital is without the boundary of the borough.

The numbers of the population must not be taken as absolutely correct, as the compilation from the schedules may cause a
slight alteration. The numbers given do not include the persons on board ship. The population for the Thames and Hokitika
Boroughs cannot yet be given.

On account of the absence of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages from Nelson, the information required for this
report has not been forwarded.

Of the total deaths, males contributed 44; females, 48. Of the same total, 47 deaths, or 51.08 per cent. of the whole
number, were of children under 5 years of age; and of these 47 deaths, 31 were of children under 1 year, being 33.69 per cent.

The following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the proportions per cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the month of
April, 1874.

CLASS V.-VIOLENT DISEASES OR DEATHS.
ORDER 1.-Accident or Negligence.---Fracture, 3; Suffocated, 1. Unspecified Deaths, 3.

Of the cases of diphtheria, 2 occurred in Christchurch and 2 in Dunedin.
The deaths from diarrhœa have fallen from 37 in March to 12 in April.
The numbers of cases of death from this cause lessen as the temperature is reduced. In February they were 52; in March,
37; in April, 12.
The accompanying Meteorological Report shows that the average temperature in the shade, for the whole Colony, was
4 degrees lower in April than in March.
Of the cases of fever, 4 occurred in Wellington, 4 in Christchurch, 1 in Dunedin, 1 in Auckland, and 1 in the Thames
Borough. 1 death, of a child at Auckland, was supposed infanticide.
