NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1872.

Mongonui. Generally fine during the day, but frequently heavy rain at night; maximum rain on 16th for previous twenty-
four hours, 2.24 inches; S.W. wind; strong N.E. gale on 13th, on 18th stormy from N.W., and on 24th, 25th, and 26th, strong
N.E. winds and rain; prevailing wind, S.E.; thunder on 26th. Maximum temperature in shade, 81°; minimum, 48°.

Auckland.-Steady, fine weather almost throughout; gale with strong gusts from N.E., on 24th, especially at night; heavy
shower during night of 25th; 683 inch the maximum fall for month; prevailing wind, N.E. Maximum temperature in shade,
72°-7; minimum, 48°.3.

Taranaki. Very fine month, small rainfall, and very warm weather; greatest rainfall on 13th, 47 inch; winds moderate,
and prevailed from the northward. Maximum temperature in shade, 75°; minimum, 40°.

Napier. Generally fine throughout, with moderate winds prevailing from N.E.; greatest rainfall on 27th, 57 inch; very
hot during latter part of month. Maximum temperature in shade, 82°; minimum, 43°.

Wellington. On 1st and 2nd, wet and unpleasant from S.E.; very fine bright weather from 3rd to 11th, with pleasant fresh
breeze from S.E. and N.W., hot at times; rain commenced on 12th from N.W., and continued showery to 14th, wind changing
to S.E.; remarkably fine, bright, and pleasant for remainder of month,-very dry, and hot sun, but cool breezes frequently,
especially at nights; strong N.W. wind on 29th and 30th; maximum rain recorded on 13th, 650 inch. Maximum temperature
in shade, 75°; minimum, 41°. On the whole, splendid weather, but very dry.

Wanganui. Exceeding dry, hot weather throughout; greatest fall of rain on 16th, 20 inch for twenty-four hours; moderate
S.W. winds prevailed; no heavy gales occurred, but at times fresh breezes. Maximum temperature in shade, 81°; minimum, 38°.

Nelson. Very fine dry weather, only one rainy day; winds moderate, and prevailed from N.E.; very warm at times.
Maximum temperature in shade, 79°; minimum, 42°.

Christchurch.--Fine and very dry and hot, at times close and oppressive; maximum fall of rain on 14th, 36 inch; wind
prevailed from N.E., and at times fresh; fog on 10th and 11th. Maximum temperature in shade, 86°-8; minimum, 39°.9.

Bealey. Fine warm weather throughout; very small rainfall,-maximum only 73, on 13th; prevailing wind N.W., and
often strong; fog on 18th and 19th. Maximum temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 30°.5.

Hokitika. Very dry and bright; maximum rainfall on 13th, 2.48 inches; prevailing wind, S.W., and moderate. Maximum
temperature in shade, 69°5; minimum, 45°-3.

Dunedin. Very warm and fine during month, with very light rain; maximum fall on 13th, 32 inch; moderate winds,
generally from E. and S.E.; fog on 30th. Maximum temperature in shade, 84°; minimum, 38°.

Queenstown. Excessively dry and hot weather; only three days of rain; greatest fall on 13th, 77 inch for previous twenty-
four hours; prevailing wind, N.W., and moderate. Maximum temperature in shade, 76°5; minimum, 36°.8.

Southland. Exceedingly fine and dry throughout; maximum rainfall on 13th, 45 inch; winds prevailed from S. and N.W.;
gale of hot wind on 29th, from N. Maximum temperature in shade, 76°; minimum, 31°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Exceedingly dry hot weather throughout the Colony, and in many places the drought was severely felt. No gales of any
note occurred. At times there were cool, pleasant breezes. Very high atmospheric pressure at nearly all the stations on 20th,
which continued for a few days and gradually fell; very fine weather at this period. Earthquakes occurred at Wellington on
1st, at 8 p.m., slight; at Dunedin on 20th, at 1.25 p.m., smart shake; and at Tairoa Head at 12.30 p.m., doing slight damage to
coping-stones of parapet wall. Aurora at Queenstown on 24th. Meteors-Wellington and Nelson on 28th, 10.57 p.m.; Queens-
town, 22nd, large.
