NOTES FOR JULY, 1873.
Mongonui. Return from this station incomplete.
Auckland.--Fine from 1st to 4th; showery from 5th to 24th; fine bright weather to 27th; stiff S.E. breeze, ceasing abruptly
towards evening, on 28th, with cold driving showers; cold and showery on 30th from S.W.; maximum rainfall recorded on
7th, 800 inch; wind prevailed from S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 64°.8; minimum, 35°.9.
Taranaki. A very fine winter month, the finest for years back; a few squalls, with thunder and lightning, during middle of
month; a whirlwind occurred on 15th; maximum rainfall on 30th, 1.3 inch; prevailing wind from S.E. Maximum tem-
perature, 63°; minimum, 33°.
Napier. Wet, changeable weather, prevailing southerly wind; on the 7th strong N.E. wind; on 27th stormy from the South;
snow on 20th; cold frosty nights; maximum rainfall on 8th, 2.34 inches. Maximum temperature, 64°; minimum, 32°.
Wellington. Fine and pleasant up to evening of 6th, when it changed from N.W. to S.E. and brought heavy rain and strong
wind; continued wet and unpleasant from this quarter till the 12th, changed then to N. W., and very heavy rain on the
afternoon of 13th, 1 inch falling in two hours; heavy rain on night of 17th from N.; wind changeable during remainder of
month, and very showery; hail on 20th, 22nd, and 25th; very severe on 22nd; rain on night of 28th, and very strong
N.W. wind; foggy on 1st, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, and 12th; on the whole, a wet month; maximum rainfall recorded on 7th
1.350 inch; prevailing wind from S.E. Maximum temperature, 56°; minimum, 34°.
Wanganui. Fine early part of month, but from 7th the weather was generally wet, cold, and changeable, occasionally fine;
little wind except on 19th, when it was squally from S., and on 22nd gale in night from W.; maximum rainfall recorded on
17th, 80 inch. Maximum temperature, 61°; minimum, 30°.
Nelson. Very fine month, with prevailing easterly wind; strong wind on 4th from E., and 29th, N.E. without rain; snow on 21st;
maximum rainfall recorded on 18th, 1.2 inch. Maximum temperature, 62°; minimum, 28°.
Christchurch. Wet, unpleasant weather, with S.W. wind generally; maximum rainfall, 2.79 inches, which fell between 4 p.m. on
18th and 10 a.m. on 19th, the heaviest fall recorded for a long time; strong wind on 18th and 19th from S.W., otherwise
moderate; snow on 20th, 22nd, and 23rd, also hail; fog on 7th. Maximum temperature, 55°; minimum, 28°-3.
Bealey. Fine early part, wet during middle, and showery towards end of month, but on the whole small rainfall; maximum
occurred on 29th, 1.5 inch for previous twenty-four hours; wind moderate and changeable; high wind on 27th, N.W.;
snow on five days; hail on 22nd, and seven foggy days. Maximum temperature, 48°5; minimum, 20°.
Hokitika. Very fine pleasant weather, very few days of rain; the maximum recorded on 16th, 2.27 inches; twenty-three days
of easterly wind and generally moderate; heavy squalls of wind and rain on 13th from E., and on 16th from same quarter,
with thunder. Maximum temperature, 55°.6; minimum, 27°-9.
Dunedin. Showery and unpleasant early part of month; very fine from 10th to 18th, with light wind; the remainder of month
wet, cold, and disagreeable, wind chiefly S. W., and very stormy from 20th to 25th; maximum rain recorded on 9th, 382
inch; snow fell on 20th and 21st; prevailing wind from S.W. Maximum temperature, 52°; minimum, 32°.
Queenstown. Changeable weather, cold, stormy, and severe at times, and often bright and fine, especially in early part of month;
thunder on 12th; heavy snow storm on 20th and 21st, lasting several hours, wind S.E.; small rainfall; maximum on 13th,
51 inch; prevailing wind S.W. Maximum temperature, 49.2°; minimum, 29-3°.
Southland. Very fine weather for time of year; small rainfall and moderate winds, prevailing from E.; maximum rainfall
recorded on 22nd, 47 inch.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Rainfall at some of the Northern stations in excess, but on West Coast and in the South it was considerably below the usual
average, and the weather was tolerably fine for time of year. The prevailing wind throughout was from S.W., but no violent
storms occurred. The temperature throughout was below the average, and frequently cold, severe weather occurred, with snow,
hail, and thunder. Earthquakes reported at Taranaki on 5th, at about 3 a.m., sharp; and at Wanganui on 4th slight, and 5th,
2 in morning; also at midnight sharp shake felt.
