Colony.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to
appoint
ARTHUR CHILLAS HENDERSON, Esq.,
to be Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court at
Invercargill. This appointment dates from the 2nd
December, 1872.

JOHN BATHGATE.

Rules relative to Remission of Sentences of Prisoners
confined in Gaols and Penal Establishments in
New Zealand.

  1. PETITIONS from Prisoners for remission of
    sentences on the ground of industry and good
    conduct will be entertained after the expiration of
    the following proportions of their sentences:---
    Several sentences for less than Six Months each,
    if amounting in the aggregate to Six Months
    or upwards; and sentences of Six Months, and
    not exceeding Twelve Months, Four-fifths.
    Sentences exceeding Twelve Months, and not
    exceeding Two Years, Three-fourths.
    Sentences of upwards of Two Years, Two-thirds.
    Sentences for Life, Ten Years.

  2. Such Petitions shall be forwarded by the Gaoler
    to the Judge or Justice who sentenced the prisoner,
    who will forward the same with his report thereon,
    if a Judge of the Supreme Court, to the Colonial
    Secretary, or if a Judge of a District Court, or a
    Magistrate, to the Minister of Justice, for the con-
    sideration of His Excellency the Governor. Such
    Petitions must be accompanied by a Report from the
    Gaoler stating whether the conduct of the Applicant
    has been (1) "ordinary," (2) "good," or (3) "very
    good," during the period of his imprisonment;
    whether he has been habitually industrious; what
    misconduct, if any, he has been guilty of, and the
    Punishment awarded therefor; and whether he has
    been previously convicted either in this Colony or
    elsewhere, all of which circumstances will be taken
    into consideration in granting a remission of sentence.
    The Gaoler must also procure and send with his
    report a certificate from a Visiting Justice, to the
    effect that he believes the Gaoler's report to be
    correct.

  3. Petitions for remission on other grounds than
    that of industry and good conduct may be made at
    any time, and should be transmitted in the same
    manner.

In the Turakina Cavalry Volunteers.
Frank Yates Lethbridge to be Sub-Lieutenant.
Date of commission, 3rd June, 1872.

In the Turakina Rifle Volunteers.
Felix O'Sullivan McCarthy to be Lieutenant. Date
of commission, 17th August, 1872.

In the Auckland Naval Volunteers.
Henry Chapman to be Lieutenant. Date of com-
mission, 30th August, 1871.
Robert Wells to be Sub-Lieutenant. Date of com-
mission, 30th August, 1871.

In the No. 1 Company, Auckland Grammar School
Cadets.

Honorary Sub-Lieutenant John Balneavis to be
Honorary Lieutenant. Date of commission, 12th
November, 1872.
Louis Von Tempsky to be Honorary Sub-Lieutenant.
