NOTES FOR JUNE, 1873.
Mongonui.—Very fine, clear and frosty up to 21st, with moderate winds, generally from S.E.; remainder
of month showery and
squally, except last three days which were fine; strong S.W. winds on 26th and 27th; hail on 26th; very small rainfall;
maximum temperature in shade, 71°; minimum, 41°.
Auckland.—Remarkably fine for time of year; very small rainfall; maximum on 22nd, -62 inch; cloudy with light showers,
from 1st to 4th; very fine, bright, and calm from 5th to 21st; stiff breeze on 10th N.W., and 16th S.E.; violent storm of
rain and wind on night of 22nd N.W.; cloudy and showery from 23rd to 27th; fine and bright, with frosts, 28th to 30th;
prevailing wind southerly. Maximum temperature, 69°; minimum, 35°.5.
Taranaki.—The finest month observed for many years; moderate winds prevailing from S.E.; maximum rainfall registered on
25th, -75 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 68°; minimum, 32°.
Napier.—Weather generally fine, with cold nights and mornings; very small rainfall; maximum occurred on 7th, -26 inch;
winds generally moderate, and from the South. Maximum temperature, -65°; minimum, 35°.
Wellington.—Rather wet and dull up to 8th, wind chiefly S.E.; heavy gale on 2nd from N.W.; pleasant from 9th to 20th,
light winds from N.W. to N.E., very mild and genial for time of year; on 21st barometer commenced to fall, and in the
evening it came on to rain heavily, and very strong N.W. wind at night; heavy rain on 23rd from S.E., and stormy at
times, very cold; continued showery, stormy, and unpleasant for remainder of month, but very severe on 26th, when the
wind changed from light N.E. in the morning to S.E. in the afternoon and brought heavy rain and wind, at night changed
to S.W. and blew hard with rain, hail, and sleet, very cold and severe; 2.170 inches recorded on morning of 27th, barometer
29.428; again on 27th, strong from S.W., with rain and slight hail; 28th, 29th, and 30th, fine and bright, with clear frosty
nights. Maximum temperature in shade, 62°; minimum, 33°.
Wanganui.—Fine and bright, with southerly wind, first part of month; on 17th changed to N.W., and continued cold and wet to
the end; on 22nd and 27th stormy from N.W., with rain, small total rainfall; maximum fall recorded on 27th, -28 inch;
prevailing wind N.W. Maximum temperature, 63°; minimum, 31°.
Nelson.—Very fine and mild for time of year; blew hard on night of 3rd from N., and rain; heavy gale on 21st and 22nd S.E.,
with much rain, 2.58 fell in ten hours; otherwise winds moderate, and prevailed from southward. Maximum temperature,
66°; minimum, 29°.
Christchurch.—Generally fine and pleasant weather, with occasional showers; maximum rainfall recorded on 27th, -36 inch;
wind; stormy on 21st and 22nd S.W. with rain; 27th, hail; fog on 5th and 6th. Maximum temperature,
68°.2; minimum, 25°.8.
Bealey.—Rain first three days, and then fine till 20th, with northerly winds; remainder of month stormy and wet with snow,
generally; thunder on 21st and 22nd; four days of snow; seven days of fog; prevailing wind for month from
N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 56°8; minimum, 16°6.
Hokitika.—Wet and unpleasant, though at times fine; maximum rainfall on 22nd, 3.60 inches; prevailing wind easterly, and
often stormy; thunder on 22nd and 23rd; fog on 7th, 8th, and 11th. Maximum temperature in shade, 58°7; minimum,
31°.2.
Dunedin.—Extremely fine at commencement of month, but afterwards changeable; very cold and frosty after 24th, winds pre-
vailed from S.W.; maximum rainfall on 13th, -710 inch; fog on 12th. Maximum temperature, 60°; minimum, 32°.
Queenstown.—Very fine for time of year, prevailing N.W. wind and generally light; maximum rainfall occurred on 22nd, -75
inch for twenty-four hours previous; snow on 22nd; fog on 7th, 8th, and 9th. Maximum temperature, 62°; minimum, 27°.
Southland.—Dull mild weather, though frosty occasionally during nights; moderate winds prevailing from N.E.; maximum
rainfall registered on 1st, -97 inch; hail on 27th; fog on 7th.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Remarkably fine mild calm weather except on the West Coast of Middle Island, where it was frequently squally and wet;
and at Wellington it was stormy in latter part of month. Temperature on the whole higher than average, and rainfall less than
usual. Earthquakes occurred at Napier, on 4th, at 12.40 a.m., slight; at Wanganui, on 8th, at 12.7 a.m., smart; at Mana Island,
at Wanganui, on 13th, at 8.15 a.m., slight; at Marton, Foxton, and Wanganui, on 18th, at about 5.15 p.m., smart; at Wanganui,
on 22nd, at 11.45 a.m. sharp; at Otaki, Foxton, and Wanganui, on 29th, at 9 p.m., smart. Aurora observed on 27th in South.
