NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1873.

Mongonui. Unpleasant weather; frequently wet, but total not large; maximum fall on 28th 1.64 inch for previous twenty-four
hours; stormy on 1st from N.E. with rain, and strong winds on 8th, 9th, 15th, 20th, and 31st from S.W., accompanied generally
by rain; thunder on 6th and 19th; fog on 25th; prevailing wind S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 89°; minimum, 52°.

Auckland. Sultry and oppressive weather and little rain; a stiff gale on 8th and 9th from S.W. with heavy rain, 838
inch being recorded on 8th; thunder on 6th; prevailing wind, S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 84°.8; minimum, 51°3.

Taranaki. Fine early part of month, though strong S.E. gale on 5th, 6th, 7th, and showery during middle of month, and
fine towards the end; prevailing wind from S.W.; small rainfall, maximum on 15th, 1.57 inch. Maximum temperature in
shade, 83°; minimum, 42°.

Napier. Very unsettled throughout; in early and middle part of month very high wind from N.E., especially 5th to 8th, and
20th and 21st; thunder storms on 13th and 18th; rainfall above the average; maximum fall, 2.77 inches on 8th. Maximum
temperature in shade, 80°; minimum, 48°.

Wellington. Threatening weather up to the 6th, when it commenced to blow from S.E., with heavy rain; wet and squally
from this quarter till 9th; fog on 6th strong N.W. winds on 13th and 14th with beating rain; squall from S.W. with hail,
rain, and thunder on 20th; otherwise weather during remainder of month was tolerably fine, with showers at intervals;
lightning on 2nd, and on 10th very brilliant, also on night of 27th; hail on 20th; maximum rain on 7th, 850 inch.
Maximum temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 45°.3.

Wanganui. Fine beginning of month, and sultry; showery from 7th up to 20th; wind N.W. and at times very strong,
especially on 9th, 15th, and 21st; thunder on 17th; fine and clear for remainder of month; twenty days of N.W. wind;
maximum rainfall recorded on 18th, 1.64 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 86°; minimum, 42°.

Nelson. Fine month, only five days of rain, but heavy fall on nights of 1st and 17th from N.W.; 2.70 inches recorded on
morning of 18th; wind eastward, severe thunder and lightning on night of 4th; a heavy gale of wind on 13th from N.W.,
lasting all day; prevailing winds S.W. and N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 85°; minimum, 42°.

Christchurch. Wet weather generally, with strong winds from N.W. and S.W.; thunder on 4th, 14th, and 20th; maximum
rainfall recorded on 9th, 1.73; prevailing wind from S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 85°-8; minimum, 42°.2.

Bealey. Unpleasant wet weather usually, but occasionally bright and clear; wind prevailed from N.W., and very strong
at times; thunder on 17th; maximum rainfall on 14th, 3.6 inches for previous twenty-four hours; hail on 17th; fog on 26th.
Maximum temperature in shade, 79°; minimum, 34°.

Hokitika. Heavy rain at this station; maximum on 14th, 3.72 inches for previous twenty-four hours; strong winds at
times from S.W., from which quarter it prevailed; thunder on 19th; at times fine and bright. Maximum temperature in
shade, 76°.9; minimum, 45°.

Dunedin. Unusually showery and cold, sky much overcast; greatest rainfall on 9th, 750 inch; thunder, hail, and rain on
4th; thunder on 25th, and stormy on 14th and 15th, W. and S.W.; wind prevailed from S. and W.; squally on 27th and 28th,
with rain. Maximum temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 38°.

Queenstown. Beginning of month warm, a continuation of weather during latter part of December; sudden change on 8th,
and became wintry and continued changeable for a fortnight, when it set in fine for remainder of month; gale on 9th from S.W.;
snow on 9th; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 71 inch; winds very moderate, prevailed from N.W. Maximum temperature in
shade, 84°; minimum, 35.8.

Southland. Wet unpleasant weather, with occasionally strong westerly wind; maximum rainfall recorded on 15th, 1.05
inch; winds changeable; frequent thunder and hail.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Unpleasant weather generally at all the stations during this month; heavy falls of rain, and frequently stormy, with
thunder and hail; very wet wet in South. High atmospheric pressure on 30th, and very low on the 8th throughout; storms
occurred on latter date. Earthquakes occurred at Hokitika on 4th at 8.30 p.m., slight; at Wanganui on 6th at 6.30 p.m., smart;
at Nelson on 26th, slight; at Timaru on 26th at 6.7 p.m; and at Queenstown on 31st at 8.50 p.m., slight.
