Foot-and-Mouth Disease does not exist in Victoria.
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 26th February, 1873.
THE following letter from the Chief Secretary of
Victoria, reporting that foot-and-mouth disease
does not exist in that Colony, is published for general
information.
G. M. WATERHOUSE.
Victoria, Chief Secretary's Office,
Melbourne, 11th February, 1873.
SIR,—With reference to your letter of the 20th
ultimo, inquiring as to the existence of foot-and-
mouth disease in the cattle of this Colony, I have the
honor to inform you that the disease is not at present
known, or suspected to exist, in Victoria.
In June, 1872, some cases were found, in one
district of the Colony, of cattle affected with the
foot-and-mouth disease, contracted, as was generally
supposed, from a bull imported a few months before
from England, but, by adopting prompt and vigorous
measures, the disease was thoroughly extirpated in a
very short time, and has not since reappeared.
I have, &c.,
W. H. ODGERS,
(for the Chief Secretary).
The Hon. the Colonial Secretary,
New Zealand, Wellington.
