NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1872.

Auckland.—Remarkably fine, genial weather; a severe gale from. S.W. on 8th, with 800 inch of rain, chiefly during night,
and on 10th from same quarter, not so strong; wet and stormy on 28th from S.; prevailing wind S.W.; fog on 23rd; barometer
30.515 on 5th. Maximum temperature in shade, 68°.1; minimum, 36°.2.

Taranaki.—Very fine generally, but changeable, and at times very dull and wet; northerly gale on 7th, with 1.30 inch of
rain; barometer, 30.496 on 18th, and very fine; prevailing winds N.E. and S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 72°;
minimum, 35°.

Napier.—Fine weather, very small rainfall; maximum 37 inch on 9th; prevailing wind N.E., and stormy on 1st, 6th, and
8th from that quarter; on 13th and 27th strong from S.W. and N.W.; high barometer on 16th, 30.497. Maximum temperature
in shade, 76°; minimum, 38°.

Wanganui.—Clear, warm weather, with light N.W. winds, very little rain, maximum on 8th, 80 inch; barometer on 18th,
30.58. Maximum temperature in shade, 72°; minimum, 30°.

Wellington.—Up to 9th showery and stormy, though mild; on 5th, 6th, and 7th, strong N.W. winds, with rain, changed to
S.W. on 7th, and heavy rain continued to 8th, 2.15 inches recorded on that morning; fine and generally mild from 10th to 22nd,
with northerly winds; on 23rd, stormy from N.W., and most disagreeable, clouds of dust and close weather; also dust storms on
26th and 30th, wind N.W. Fog on 1st. Maximum temperature in shade, 64°; minimum, 35°.

Nelson.—Tolerably fine during month, little rain; maximum on 8th, 1.15 inch; strong northerly gale on 7th, with rain;
prevailing wind S.E. and N.W. On 16th, high barometer, 30.436. Maximum temperature in shade, 68°; minimum, 32.

Christchurch.—Very fine up to 27th, that day and the following very rough and cold from S.W., with snow and sleet;
cleared up again on 29th; maximum rain on 28th, 400 inch; prevailing winds N.E. and S.W. Barometer 30-509 on 15th.
Maximum temperature in shade, 74°.2; minimum, 30°.2.

Bealey.—Fine weather generally, with high N.W. winds, blew twenty days from that quarter; maximum rain on 6th, 1.67
inch; thunder on 7th; snow on 8th, 28th, and 29th; high barometer middle of month. Maximum temperature in shade, 60°;
minimum, 22°.

Hokitika.—Average weather at this station; light winds, prevailing from N.E. and S.W.; maximum rain on 6th, 94 inch;
fog on 21st; high barometer on 16th, 30.464. Maximum temperature in shade, 59°.3; minimum, 30°.6.

Dunedin.—Very fine weather generally, with occasional showers. Maximum fall on 14th, 59 inch; prevailing wind W. and
N.W.; cold severe weather on 27th and 28th, with snow and hail from S.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 68°; minimum,
32°.

Queenstown.—Very fine weather on the whole; greatest rain on 7th, 94 inch; snow on 7th, 27th, and 28th, from S.W.;
moderate winds prevailing from N.W; high barometer on 15th, 30.548. Maximum temperature in shade, 66°.1; minimum, 29°.9.

Southland.—Generally fine; snow on 27th; hail on 6th, 26th, 27th, and 28th; northerly gale on 11th and 12th, with rain;
maximum fall recorded on 13th, 1.05 inch; prevailing wind N.; barometer on 16th, 30.36. Maximum temperature in shade,
67°; minimum, 24°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Very fine weather throughout for time of year; no severe storms recorded, and unusually small rainfall; very high atmospheric
pressure occurred throughout about the middle of month, with fine clear weather. Earthquakes occurred at Patea on 5th, 10.45
p.m., slight; Foxton, 5th, 10:38 p.m., slight; Queenstown, 6th, 3 p.m.; Wanganui on 10th, 8.15 a.m., slight; on. 20th at
White's Bay, Wanganui, Wellington, Hutt, Bull's, Hawera, Patea, Foxton, and Nelson; smart except at Foxton, where it
was slight, about 5.7 p.m.; Wellington on 24th, at 9.17 a.m., very slight. Meteor reported at Christchurch on 14th.
