NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1872.
Mongonui.—Showery weather, but moderate rainfall; maximum on 29th, 1.11 inch; on 7th, strong N.E. wind; 9th,
strong N.W. with thunder, and 11th, gale from same quarter with rain; 22nd, strong from N.E. with rain, and 23rd and 24th
from N.W.; thunder also on 1st, 29th, and 30th; prevailing wind N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 66°; minimum,
35°.
Auckland.—Genial pleasant weather generally; small rainfall, though showery; maximum on 24th, 0.725; frosty nights
from 16th to 20th; wind variable, but most frequent from S. and S.W.; showery and stormy from S.; violent squalls on 25th
from N.E. Heavy thunderstorm on 29th. Maximum temperature, 61°.9 in shade; minimum 44°.2.
Taranaki.—Frequent showers in early and latter part, and fine during middle of month; wind prevailed from S.E., and
generally moderate; on 28th, strong from N., with heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and hail; hail also on 2nd. Maximum rain
on 7th, 1.68 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 64°; minimum, 31°.
Napier.—Weather throughout generally fine, with very slight rain; maximum fall on 31st, 0.12 inch; wind prevailed
from N.E., and rather strong during latter part of month; clear frosty nights. Maximum temperature in shade, 70°; minimum,
30°.
Wanganui.—Moist temperate weather generally, a few clear frosty nights; wind moderate, prevailed from N.W.; squally
and wet on 11th, 12th, and 13th; wind westerly; maximum rain on 15th, 0.43 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 67°;
minimum, 30°.
Wellington.—Rather fine early part of month, but very cold from N.W.; hail on 3rd from S.E.; from 7th the weather was
showery and unsettled, wind chiefly N.W.; occasionally fine days, though dull; on 10th, strong N.W. wind and rain; on 12th
sudden squall from S.E., with hail, sleet and rain, very cold; on 14th, squall of hail, sleet, and rain from S.W.; also hail on 15th
from same quarter; on night of 28th vivid lightning and loud thunder, with heavy shower, wind S.E.; stormy from S.E., with
rain on 29th and 30th; on 31st hail and rain, and very cold. Maximum rain 950 inch on 11th; prevailing wind N.W.
Maximum temperature in shade, 58°; minimum, 31°.7.
Nelson.—Fine early part of month, rain commenced on 6th, and continued up to 13th; very heavy fall on 10th, with strong
N.E. gale, 5.95 inches fell in twelve hours; fine again till 23rd, when there was heavy rain from E. and S.E.; dull during end of
month; wind changeable. Maximum temperature 62° in shade; minimum, 26°.
Christchurch.—Weather generally very fine throughout month; 12th and 14th very cold and severe, with considerable fall
of snow, thunder also on 14th; strong S.W. wind on 29th; and rain and cold and disagreeable on 30th; fog on 26th and 27th;
maximum rain on 1st, 0.375 inch; prevailing N.W. winds. Maximum temperature in shade, 58°.2; minimum, 23°.7.
Bealey.—Very cold, severe, and very wet during first and latter part of month; bright and frosty from 16th to 22nd; pre-
vailing wind N.W.; maximum rain on 11th, 3.650 inches; thunder on 10th; ten days of snow; fog on 24th. Maximum
temperature, 49° in shade; minimum, 14°.4.
Hokitika.—Very wet and unpleasant weather, except from 16th to 22nd, when it was bright and frosty; stormy in early part,
principally westerly, with thunder, snow and hail on 12th; maximum rain, 1.70 inch on 28th; thirteen days of east wind.
Maximum temperature in shade, 57°.1; minimum, 27°.4.
Dunedin.—Fine weather until 11th, when a severe snowstorm occurred, and lasted till the 15th; the latter part of month
showery; maximum rainfall, 1.380 inch on 29th; fog on 24th; wind moderate, prevailed from W. Maximum temperature, 56°
in shade; minimum, 27°.
Queenstown.—Cold and wet to middle of month, when it changed to bright calm days and cold frosty nights; slight rain at
latter part of month; prevailing winds N.W. and S.W.; strong from latter on 14th and 18th; six days of snow; fog on 19th;
maximum rain on 11th, 1.41 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 60°; minimum, 23°.
Southland.—Much bad weather; 1st to 11th, showery, with thunder and lightning; from 11th to 16th, heavy snowstorms,
latter part of month showery; five days of snow, four of hail, four of thunder; no gales or fog; prevailing winds, N. and N.W.;
maximum rainfall on 12th 0.98 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 58°; minimum, 26°.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Temperature below the average throughout, generally fine in North, and rain moderate; in the South very severe cold
weather, especially in early part of month, when a heavy snow-storm occurred, also heavy rain and frequent thunder-storms.
Earthquakes reported at Wellington, very slight, on 4th; at Waipukurau, on 2nd, sharp; at Foxton, on 2nd, slight. Aurora
seen in North on 9th.
