NOTES FOR MAY, 1872.
Mongonui.—Tolerably fine early part of month; stormy and wet in middle of month from N.W. and S.W., especially on 11th,
12th, 13th, and 18th; thunder on 13th, 14th, and 15th; also strong gale from N.W. on night of 27th, with rain; 1.1 inch
rain recorded on 23rd, and prevailing winds S.W. and N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 70.0; minimum, 35.0.
Auckland.—Wet cloudy weather generally, only five pleasant days; wind below average, and prevailed from S.W.; gale on 11th,
12th, and 13th from S.W., with rain, hail, and thunder; a stormy night on 23rd from S.W.; 1.01 inch rain recorded on
24th; hail also on 16th and 28th. Maximum temperature, 66.3; minimum, 42.1.
Taranaki.—Tolerably fine early part of month, but from 10th to 18th unusually bad weather, rain, thunder, hail, and strong
southerly winds; maximum rain on 18th, 1.02 inch; five days of thunder and four of hail; prevailing wind, S. E
Maximum temperature, 68.0; minimum, 34.0.
Napier.—Changeable and cold; strong N.W. wind on 12th and 13th, with rain; very wet towards end of month from S.W.;
1.05 inch recorded on 25th and 1.17 on 26th; prevailing wind from S.W. Maximum temperature, 69.1; minimum, 38.0.
Wanganui.—Very wet and disagreeable month, the first few days only being really fine; from 11th to night of 13th heavy N.W.
gale, with rain, hail, and thunder; 1.76 inch rain recorded on 12th; after this dull wet weather, with light winds; low
barometer on 12th, prevailing wind N.W.; thunder and hail also on 15th. Maximum temperature, 65.0; minimum, 37.0.
Wellington.—Fine bright mild weather up to 5th; showery and unpleasant during the remainder of the month, with only an
occasional fine day, wind chiefly from S.E. and N.W., and generally light; very cold at times, and frosty nights. Very low
barometer on 11th and 12th, but rather fine weather, except on night of 11th, when there was a squall of rain and sleet, and
very cold. On 13th severe squalls of hail and rain from S.E.; at 4 p.m. on 17th commenced to rain from N.W., and
continued all night, wind changing to S.E. and light; 3 inches recorded on the 18th; heavy rain and strong wind from S.E on
18th; cold and severe, 2.13 inches recorded on 19th. Maximum temperature, 60.5; minimum, 31.5.
Nelson.—Dull showery weather during month, with changeable winds and moderate; on 11th, strong N.E. wind, with rain and
thunder; greatest rainfall recorded on 23rd, 1.70 inch; fog on 9th and 10th. Maximum temperature, 62.0; minimum, 27.0.
Christchurch.—First nine days fine and mild; on 10th heavy rain; the weather then became much colder, and snow fell on 14th;
several frosty nights; temperature unusually low; from 24th to end of month very dull, with almost continuous drizzling
rain, wind S.W., from which quarter it prevailed; hail fell on 12th and 13th; maximum rainfall on 20th, 0.500 inch.
Maximum temperature, 64.9; minimum, 21.5.
Bealey.—Calm cloudy weather generally, cold and severe; snow on 7 days; 18 inches fell on 14th; greatest rainfall recorded
on 7th, 1 inch; N.W. wind prevailed, and strong on 2nd, 7th, and 9th from that quarter; the minimum temperature on
grass, 16° below zero, is the lowest ever recorded at this station; fog on four days. Maximum temperature in shade, 55.4;
minimum, 12.0.
Dunedin.—Fine to 10th, when snow storm commenced from S.W., and lasted to 15th; sharp frosts from 11th to 18th; showery
during latter part of month; greatest rainfall recorded on 14th, 0.780 inch; prevailing wind from W. and S.W., and
moderate; no storms occurred. Maximum temperature, 61.0; minimum, 30.0.
Queenstown.—Most severe weather during month; hard frosts and snow on eight days; very severe on 13th. Maximum rain on
7th, 0.98 inch; prevailing wind N.W. and moderate. Maximum temperature, 60.3; minimum, 21.5.
Southland.—Tolerably fine first eight days, with N.W. wind; lightning on 7th and 8th; 9th, thunder, barometer falling,
and rain; on 10th commenced greatest snow storm on record in Southland, continued for five days to depth of 15 inches;
wind W. and squally, and thunder, lightning, and hail; barometer, 28.779 on 12th, and then rose; snow ceased on 15th,
very severe frost; maximum temperature being only 28°, lowest in fourteen years. Cold wet and severe during latter part
of month; four days of thunder, five of snow, four of hail, five of fog. Maximum rain, 1.25 inch; prevailing northerly
winds. Maximum temperature, 67°; minimum, 17°.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Very cold, severe weather throughout, with much snow, hail, and rain; unusually severe frosts and snowstorms in the South-
Earthquakes—at Taupo, 5th and 6th, sharp shocks; Tarawera, on 7th, heavy shock—and on 18th, heavy shock, at 12.38 p.m.;
Nelson, on 11th, at 1.30 p.m.; Napier, on 18th, smart shock, at 12.40 p.m.
