NOTES.
Mongonui. Observer remarks that this was the driest month on record for this district; the greatest fall was on 5th, 0:40 inch
for twenty-four hours; light winds during month, chiefly from N.W. Maximum temperature on 15th and 17th, 78.0.
Auckland. Unusually warm and dry, with occasional cold nights. Maximum rainfall on 19th, only 0.154; severe S.W. gale on
12th and 13th, causing great damage to vegetation; force of wind during this storm unusually even, from 40 to 45 miles
per hour; barometer rather high; otherwise winds moderate, prevailed from S.W. Maximum temperature on 29th, 79.3.
Taranaki. Generally fine during month, small rainfall. Maximum on 18th, 0.570 inch. Stormy and squally on 11th, 12th,
and 13th, from S.E., but little rain; stormy on 18th from N.E. with rain; otherwise winds moderate, and prevailed from
S.W.; four days of fog. Maximum temperature on 15th, 72.0.
Napier. Showery, unsettled; rainfall considerably over average; maximum on 12th, for twenty-four hours, 2.12 inches; stormy
on 4th from N.; thunder on 11th; sixteen days of N.E. wind, generally moderate. Maximum temperature on 28th, 86.0.
Wellington.--Early part of the month wet and stormy, wind from N.W. and S.E.; on the 6th very strong from N.W., with
heavy rain; 1.150 inch recorded on the 7th, when the wind changed to S.E., and still heavy rain though light wind; 1.600
inch up to morning of the 8th, maximum for month; stormy on night of 10th from S.E., and heavy rain, 1.400 inch,
measured on the 11th; severe S.E. gale during the 11th and 12th, with rain, doing much damage, very cold and severe;
cleared up on the 13th; stormy on the 15th, from N. W.; wet during the 17th, 18th, and 19th, from N. W.; otherwise the
weather for the remainder of the month was bright and pleasant, wind chiefly from N.W., and moderate. Twenty-one
days of N. W. wind. Maximum temperature on 1st, 67.0.
Nelson. Fine weather generally, but heavy rain recorded on 4th, with strong S.E. wind (1.10 inch), and 19th (1.27 inch),
barometer 29.4, and wind N.E. on 11th and 12th rather stormy from S.E., little rain, wind changeable. Maximum
temperature on 29th, 76.0.
Christchurch. Showery throughout month, with occasional fine bright weather; rainfall above average; maximum for month
on 11th, 0.582 inch; winds moderate, and prevailed from E. and S.W. Maximum temperature on 28th, 78.8.
Bealey. On 1st, 5th, 6th, and 9th, stormy from N.W. and showery; gale on 16th, from N.W.; also strong winds from same
quarter on 21st, 23rd, 25th, and 29th. Altogether, weather squally, showery, and unpleasant, with only occasionally bright
days;-four days of snow; twenty-three days of N.W. wind; greatest rainfall on 17th, 2.270 inches. Maximum
temperature on 15th, 73.5.
Hokitika. Wet and unpleasant during early and latter part, but finer during middle of month; on 19th storm from S.W., with
heavy rain and hail; barometer 29.372; thunder also on 19th; about average rainfall for this month; fog on 28th;
maximum rainfall on 7th, 1.94 inch, and highest temperature on 5th, 68.9; prevailing wind, S.W.
Dunedin. Pleasant weather, with gentle showers; winds very light except on 19th, which was very stormy from W.; snow
and hail on 19th; greatest rain recorded on 10th, 450; prevailing winds from S. and W. Maximum temperature on 27th,
75.0.
Southland. Cold, showery, and unfavourable weather; frequent rain but small amount; four days of hail, and snow on 19th;
thunder on 10th; very light winds, which prevailed from W.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Weather excessively dry in extreme north; otherwise rainfall has been generally in excess of average for this month. A
severe S.W. gale occurred at Auckland on 12th and 13th, doing considerable damage; also at Wellington from S.E. on 11th and
12th, and at Dunedin on 19th, from W.; but winds, on the whole, have been moderate. Earthquakes reported on 10th at Welling-
ton and Christchurch, slight; on 23rd, Foxton, Wanganui, and Masterton, slight; on 25th, Foxton, Wanganui, Picton, Hutt,
Featherston, White's Bay, Otaki, Blenheim, Patea, and Wellington, all about 1.45 p.m., and in some cases smart shocks; on
26th at Nelson, slight. Aurora at Hokitika on 16th and 20th; at Dunedin and Bealey on 19th; and at Southland on 4th
and 7th.
