NOTES.

Mongonui.—Fine dry weather in general; up to 9th unsettled, wind from S.W. and N.W., and stormy at times, especially
on 4th; thunder on 3rd; remainder of month fine; greatest rainfall recorded on 8th, 0.59 inch; prevailing wind from S.W.
Maximum temperature on 30th, 71.0.

Auckland.—Dull, showery, cold weather generally during month, with strong winds, chiefly from S.W.; on 4th, stormy from
N.W., with rain; on 10th, strong S.W. wind; and on 31st, stormy from same quarter; greatest rain recorded on 8th, 0.680
inch. Maximum temperature on 25th, 70.0.

Taranaki.—Wet, cold, squally S.W. weather prevailed; on 4th gale from N., with rain and hail; on 9th stormy, with rain and
thunder; and 10th stormy, same quarter; thunder on 16th and rain, from S.W.; on 20th storm from N.W., with
thunder, rain, and hail; fog on 8th and 17th; greatest rainfall 29th, 4.08 inches. Maximum temperature on 26th, 67.0.

Napier.—Fine clear weather generally, but strong winds, especially on 5th, W.; 9th, S.W.; 12th, W.; 16th and 17th, W.;
greatest rainfall on 6th, 0:51 inches; prevailing winds from N.E and W. Maximum temperature on 17th, 77.0.

Wellington.—Very fine and bright to the 3rd, when it changed at night to heavy rain and strong wind from N.W., continuing on
the 4th; wind S.E. and still rain on the 5th 6th and 7th fine; wet on 8th from N.W.; on the 9th, sleet and rain in the
morning, wind S.E.; fine bright pleasant weather generally during the remainder of the month, from N.W.; at times high
winds, especially on the 15th, 19th, and 27th; very slight rain, except on the 28th, when it fell all day and night; remark-
ably fine during the latter part of the month. Maximum rain for the month recorded on the 5th, 1:600; twenty-seven days
of N.W. wind. Maximum temperature on the 25th, 69.0. Very slight earthshake on 1st, at 11.22 p.m.

Nelson.—Some heavy rainfalls during month, but on the whole tolerably fine weather; on 9th, 3.40 inches recorded for twenty-
four hours; 5th, 3.80 inches, wind N.E. and strong; stormy on 13th and 14th from N.W.; squally weather frequently from
S.W., the prevailing wind for month. Maximum temperature on 24th, 72.0.

Christchurch.—Generally fire, very slight rainfall, and moderate winds, chiefly from E., S.W., and N.W.; stormy on 8th and
9th from S.W., with rain and hail on 9th; on 19th, heavy N.W. gale, no rain; and on 20th, short S.W. gale, without rain;
greatest rainfall recorded on 5th, 0.622 inch. Maximum temperature on 12th, 72.4.

Bealey.—Wet, severe, and stormy weather throughout the month, twenty-five days of N.W. wind; sixteen days of gales or high
winds; 2.100 inches rain recorded on 4th, 2.280 inches on 13th, 1.930 inch on 16th, 1.840 inch on 20th, and 1.350
inch on 28th, all from N.W.; snow on 9th and 18th; hail on 13th, 18th, and 19th. Maximum temperature on 25th, 68.4.

Hokitika.—Wet unpleasant weather generally, although at intervals fine and bright; no severe storms occurred, but squally
wind prevailed from N., N.W., and S.W.; thunder on 4th, 13th, 15th and 20th; heavy rainfall on 4th, 3.65 inches; and on
16th 2.47 inches. Maximum temperature on 13th, 64.7.

Dunedin.—Fine seasonable weather, winds moderate, and prevailing from W.S.W. and N.W.; greatest rainfall only 0.43 inch
on 5th; Maximum temperature on 27th, 73.0.

Southland.—Very cold, wet, and stormy up to the 21st; coldest October in thirteen years (1865 excepted); a westerly gale on 8th
and 9th, with thunder, hail, and rain; on 13th barometer fell to 28.99, followed by gale from W., and heavy rain; on 16th,
0.86 inches; thunder also on 13th; last ten days very fine and bright; twenty-six days of W. and N.W. wind. Maximum
temperature on 25th and 26th, 72.0.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Weather throughout generally wet and stormy, with prevailing N.W. wind; rainfall on the whole in excess of average for
previous years, especially on West Coast. Temperature below average.
