NOTES.

Mongonui.—Fine weather generally. Strong northerly winds from 10th to 12th, with rain; 1.12 inch recorded on 12th. Strong
W. wind on 27th, with rain and thunder. Winds, on the whole, moderate, and prevailed from S.W. and N.W. Maximum
temperature for month, on 10th, 11th, and 26th, 64.0.

Auckland.--A wet and unpleasant month, though occasional fine days. A severe gale from the S.W., with continuous rain; 2.00
inches, and 862 miles of wind registered on morning of 30th. Snow on 4th. Hail on 28th. Prevailing wind S.W.
Maximum temperature on 1st, 60.4.

Taranaki.—Very wet weather almost throughout the month, and storms; strong west winds from 23rd to the 27th, with heavy rain
and hail on 27th; hail also on 4th. Maximum rain recorded on 12th, 2.82 inches. Prevailing wind from S.W. Maximum
temperature on 8th, 64.0.

Napier.—Fine at this station. Very slight rainfall, and moderate winds, which were chiefly from N.E. and S. Maximum rainfall
on 30th, 1.17 inch; and highest temperature on 10th, 69.0.

Wellington.—Very unsettled throughout, and at times very severe and stormy; rainfall considerably over the average. On the
3rd squally from S.E., with hail and rain; on the 8th strong N.W. wind and rain; very wet on 11th and 12th from S.E.;
1.300 inches on the 12th; on 17th stormy from S.W., with hail, sleet, and rain, very cold and severe; also hail on 18th;
strong N.W. wind on 25th, but mild; 26th, gale from N.W., with beating rain and thunder and lightning; stormy from
night of 29th to morning of 31st, from S.E.; very severe on night of 30th, with heavy beating rain all night, 1.700 inches
recorded on morning of the 31st, the maximum for month. Sheet lightning on night of 24th. Prevailing wind from N.W.
Maximum temperature on the 23rd, 60.3.

Nelson.—Disagreeable weather. Rainfall not excessive, but number of days on which it fell greater than usual; heavy fall regis.
tered on 11th, 1'60; wind S.E. Strong west wind on 11th. Stormy on night of 23rd from N.W., with rain, changing to
S.W. Occasionally fine bright weather. Prevailing wind from S.W. Maximum temperature on 10th and 11th, 62.0.

Christchurch.—Fine for time of year, with little rain and moderate winds, which prevailed from S.W. and N.E. Hail on 3rd.
On 17th, stormy from S.W., with squalls of hail and rain. On 26th, windy from N.W.; and on 27th, strong S.W. wind,
with hail and rain, also thunder and lightning. Greatest rainfall on 4th, '759 of inch; and maximum temperature on 11th,
64.5.

Bealey.—Very heavy rainfall during month. Winds generally moderate, and prevailing from N.W. On 10th, N.W. gale, with
rain; and on 22nd, stormy from same quarter, with rain. Thunder on 26th, with heavy rain; wind S.E. 1.800 inch rain
recorded on 26th. Snow fell on seven days. Maximum temperature on 9th, 53.0.

Hokitika.—Very wet squally severe weather throughout. On 16th and 17th, thunder storms, with heavy rain and fog on 16th,
and hail on 17th, wind N.E., changing to S.W. From 24th to 29th, wet stormy weather, with thunder on 25th, 27th, and
29th, and hail on 27th. Foggy on 25th, 27th, and 30th; wind chiefly from S.W. and S.E. Some sharp frosts occurred.
Prevailing wind from S.E. Greatest rainfall registered on 26th, 1.82 inch. Maximum temperature on 5th, 53.3.

Dunedin.—Pleasant weather, although rainfall rather above the average; greatest fall recorded on 31st, 1.240 inch. Winds very
moderate, chiefly from W. On 24th, stormy from W. Snow fell on 1st and 17th, and hail on 1st. Maximum temperature
on 8th, 65.0. Aurora on 18th.

Southland.—Very fine weather during month, except for last eight days, when it was wet; and a heavy thunder-storm on night
of 2nd; wind N.W., with snow. Severe storm of thunder, lightning, snow, hail, and rain on 24th from W. Thunder
also on 5th, 16th, and 31st. Snow and hail also on 3rd, 16th, and 27th. Prevailing winds from N. and N.W., light.
Greatest rainfall on 25th, '91. Maximum temperature, 67.0. Aurora on 25th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Season more than usually severe in the North and West of the Colony, with excessive rainfall on West Coast. Earthquakes
were reported by telegraph on 1st, 8.52 p.m., Cromwell, Otago; 16th, 12-25 and 9.30 p.m., Tauranga; 22nd, 7.45 a.m., at
Maketu; 27th, Lyttelton; 31st, 2.5 a.m. at Wellington, White's Bay, Cheviot, Kaiapoi, and Kaikora.
