on both sides by lands reserved for Native awards;
thence in a north and easterly direction 115 links,
bounded on both sides by lands reserved for Native
awards; thence in a south-east direction 209 links,
bounded on both sides by lands reserved for Native
awards; thence in a north and easterly direction
443 links, bounded on both sides by lands reserved
for Native awards; thence in a north-east direction
375 links, to sea coast, bounded on both sides by
lands reserved for Native awards. The whole of the
road line, from the commencement to the termination,
is delineated by a red line on the plan referred to in
the body of the Proclamation, and marked No. 1, the
estimated total length thereof being 34 miles, and the
width one chain, with the exception of that portion
described as two chains wide.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by "The Weights and Measures Act,
1868," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for
the Governor from time to time to appoint one
Inspector of Weights and Measures for any Province,
County, Borough, or District, or for each of two or
more divisions of any Province, County, Borough, or
District, the boundaries of which divisions shall be
proclaimed from time to time in the New Zealand
Gazette by the Governor: And whereas it is ex-
pedient that Inspectors should be appointed for the
divisions of the Province of Canterbury, the bound-
aries whereof are set forth in the Schedule hereto,
and that the boundaries of such divisions should be
proclaimed:

Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
G.C.M.G., Governor of New Zealand, in exercise and
pursuance of the power and authority conferred on
me by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare
that for the purposes of the said Act there shall be
within the said Province of Canterbury divisions or
districts, the boundaries whereof shall be the bound-
aries set forth in the Schedule hereto.

SCHEDULE.

CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT.
Bounded on the Northward by the south bank of
the Hurunui River; on the Westward by the County
of Westland; on the Southward by the north bank
of the Rangitata River from the sea to the source
of its tributary the Clyde River; and on the East-
ward by the sea, save and except the District of
Akaroa, hereinafter defined.

AKAROA DISTRICT.
Bounded on the Northward by the summit of the
range running by Mount Herbert and Mount Herbert
Peak, and also by the sea; on the Eastward and
Southward by the sea; on the Westward by Lake
Ellesmere from its outlet to the sea to the mouth
of the River Halswell, by that river to the western
boundary of Section 1,879, thence by that boundary
and the Ahuriri Bush Road south to the southern
boundary of Section 1,901, by that boundary and also
by the ridge of hills by Cooper's Knobs.

TIMARU DISTRICT.
Bounded on the Northward by the north bank of
the Rangitata River from the sea to the source of
its tributary the Clyde River; on the West by the
County of Westland; on the Southward by the
Province of Otago; and on the Eastward by the sea.

George Ferguson Bowen, Knight Grand
Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,

Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-

the Seal of the said Colony, at the Govern-
ment House at Wellington, this eleventh
day of October, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
one.

Wakatipu Division comprises all that area bounded
towards the North by the Province of Canterbury;
towards the East by Hawksbury, Mount Ida, and
Tokomairiro Divisions; towards the South by the
Tuapeka Division, by the late Province of Southland,
and the ocean; and towards the West by the ocean.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir

Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-

Works Act, 1870," it is among other things
enacted that the Governor may, at the request of the
Superintendent of any Province, from time to time
make regulations (as therein mentioned) for the con-
duct of Immigration under the said Act into such
Province, and for the nomination of Immigrants by
persons resident therein, and for the distribution of
funds provided by the said Act for Immigration pur-
poses, and for the introduction into and settlement in
such Province of Immigrants, and for selling as special
