ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government House, at Wellington, the
sixth day of September, 1871.
Present:
HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL.
W HEREAS by an Act of the General Assembly
of New Zealand, intituled "The Native
Reserves Amendment Act, 1862," it is amongst
other things provided, that where under the provi-
sions of "The Native Reserves Act, 1856," the
assent of the aboriginal inhabitants is required to
bringing land under the operation of the said "Native
Reserves Act, 1856," the Governor may, by Order in
Council, declare such assent to have been ascertained,
and thereupon the title of the aboriginal inhabitants
in the land to which the same shall relate shall be
deemed to be extinguished, and the land shall, from
the date of such Order in Council, vest in Her
Majesty for the purposes and subject to the provi-
sions of the said "Native Reserves Act, 1856," as
altered by the recited Act, and that as effectually as
if the same had been ceded and conveyed by such
aboriginal inhabitants to Her Majesty:
Now therefore, His Excellency the Governor, by
and with the advice and consent of the Executive
Council, doth hereby declare that the assent of the
aboriginal inhabitants to the bringing the piece of
land described in the Schedule hereunder written
under the operation of "The Native Reserves Act,
1856," has been ascertained.

W HEREAS by "The County of Westland Act,
1868," it is among other things enacted, that
in and for each Road District the Governor shall
from time to time if it shall seem fit, on the applica-
tion of a Road Board, appoint a sufficient number
of Polling Places for such Road District, as in the
said Act mentioned, and may from time to time, on
the like application, alter and vary the same: And
whereas the District Board of the Okarito Road
District, by resolution passed on the sixteenth day
of May last, requested the Governor to appoint the
under-mentioned places to be Polling Places in lieu
of those appointed under the said Act on the four-
teenth day of November, one thousand eight hundred
and sixty-eight:
Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in accord-
ance with the said resolution and in exercise of the
powers vested in me by the said Act, do hereby
appoint the places hereunder mentioned to be Polling
Places for the Okarito Road District in the said Act
mentioned, and in lieu of the places so appointed as
aforesaid, that is to say:-
The Resident Magistrate's Court House, Okarito.
The Road Board Office, Five-Mile Beach.
McFetrick's Store, Saltwater, and Ritchie's Store,
Gillespie's Beach.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir

Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same, at the Government
House, at Wellington, this eighteenth day
of September, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
one.

IN pursuance and exercise of the power and
authority in this behalf enabling me, I, Sir
George Ferguson Bowen, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, do hereby fix and appoint that
sittings of the District Court of the Otago Gold
Fields, in lieu of those heretofore appointed, shall be
held as follows:---
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Naseby
on the second Wednesday in November next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Clyde
on the Monday next after the second Wed-
nesday in November next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Queens-
town on the Monday second after the second
Wednesday in November next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Lawrence
on the second Tuesday in December next.
Provided that in case any of the days so fixed as
aforesaid shall happen to be a holiday, then the
Court appointed for that day shall be holden on the
first day thereafter, not being a holiday.
Issued this twelfth day of September, one
thousand eight hundred and seventy-one.

THE Regulations for the Examination of Candi-
dates for employment in the Civil Service, dated
1st February, 1871, and published in Gazette No. 15,
of 2nd March, 1871, are rescinded, and the following
amended Regulations, to take effect from the 1st
January, 1872, are published for general information.

REGULATIONS RESPECTING EXAMINATIONS
UNDER "THE CIVIL SERVICE ACT, 1866."
- No person can enter the Civil Service as a
probationer, or as a subordinate of the fifth class,
unless he shall be of the full age of seventeen years,
and not more than twenty-two years. The Board of
Examiners may, however, examine candidates who
are not younger than fifteen years. - Every candidate for examination must apply to
be examined in a form to be prescribed by the Board,
such application to be addressed to the Secretary, and
to be accompanied by the following certificates :-
Age.-Certificate from Registrar of Birth. Any
person unable to procure such certificate to
account for its non-production, and to prove
his age by satisfactory evidence.
Health.-A certificate of health signed by some
legally qualified Medical Practitioner.
Character.-A certificate of general good con-
duct from some Clergyman or Schoolmaster. - The examination shall be divided into two
branches, the one qualifying for appointment, the
other qualifying for promotion to any class above
the fourth. One branch shall be called the JUNIOR
EXAMINATION, and the other branch shall be called
the SENIOR EXAMINATION. - Every candidate must pass the Junior Examina-
tion (see section 9) before he shall be eligible for
any appointment in the Civil Service.
