Majesty's late Ship "Captain."
Now therefore, His Excellency Sir George Fergu-
son Bowen, the Governor of the Colony of New
Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the
Executive Council of the said Colony, in pursuance
and in exercise of the powers and authorities vested
in him by the said Act, doth hereby order and declare

That portion of the Colony formerly in the
Province of Canterbury, and being now the County

boundaries:—The sea coast from the mouth of the
River Awarua to the mouth of the River Grey ;
thence the southern boundary of the Province of
Nelson to the saddle between the Rivers Teremakau
and Hurunui; thence the watershed between the
eastern and western coasts of the said Province of
Canterbury to its intersection with the northern
boundary of the Province of Otago; thence the said
last-named boundary to the commencing point at the

WILLIAM Fox,
FORSTER GORING, Presiding.
Clerk of the Executive Council.
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 18th January, 1871.
THE following Letter and Enclosure from the
Hon. Secretary to the "Captain" Relief Fund
are published for general information.
W. GISBORNE.
"CAPTAIN" RELIEF FUND.
Royal Naval College, Portsmouth,
13th October, 1870.
SIR,—I am directed by the Central Managing Com-
mittee to request your co-operation in aid of the
above Fund, and to express a hope that by your
powerful influence and patronage in your Govern-
ment, the Fund will receive that augmentation which
it so much needs, and which the Committee feel sure
requires no recommendation from them to insure the
substantial aid and sympathy of their fellow-country-
men abroad.
Such an unparalleled calamity, resulting in loss of
life greater than at the battle of Trafalgar, has con-
sequently left a large number of families in most
distressing circumstances. A sum of £60,000 is
required to alleviate the distress of the Widows,
Orphans, and Relatives, who depended for their
maintenance on those lost in the "Captain," and the
support of Government is totally inadequate to meet
these cases. Up to the present time only £20,000
has been collected, so that there is a wide margin
left for the charitably disposed, and the Committee
are confident that this National loss only requires to
be known, to meet with that hearty response which
has invariably characterized our countrymen in dis-
tant lands.
The Committee therefore trust your Excellency
will take such steps as you may deem advisable to
cause the object they have in view to be made known
throughout your Government.
I have, &c.,
LEVESON E. H. SOMERSET,
Captain R.N., Honorary Secretary.

the Governor of New Zealand.
