THIRD ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ACCOUNTANT IN BANKRUPTCY.
To their Honors the CHIEF JUSTICE and the JUDGES of the SUPREME COURT OF NEW ZEALAND.
THE Accountant in Bankruptcy begs respectfully to lay before the Court his Third Annual Report,
applicable to the year ending 30th November, 1870.
The following notes are submitted as containing the general results which have been deduced
from the information before the Accountant in Bankruptcy.
The returns furnished to the Accountant for the past year, although exhibiting greater accuracy
and completeness than those of former years, are still capable of improvement, especially that portion
of them which embraces estates not wound up at the date of the last Annual Report. In some cases
the trustees have left the Colony without furnishing returns; and there is still considerable difficulty
in getting some of the trustees appointed by the creditors to understand or properly perform their
duties, as prescribed by sections 225 and 226 of "The Bankruptcy Act, 1867."
The Accountant has appended hereto—
I.—A Return showing the trades or callings of adjudged bankrupts for the year ending the
30th day of November, 1870, in each Province or District; and also showing the totals
of each trade or calling.
II.—A Return showing the aggregate amount of reported liabilities of adjudged bankrupts,
the maximum and minimum amounts of such liabilities, and the relative limits of the
amounts of the same, for the period commencing 1st December, 1869, and ending
30th November, 1870; and comparing the number and aggregate amounts with the
results reported for two years ending 30th November, 1869.
There is an increase in the total number of bankrupts for the year ending 30th November,
1870, as will appear from the following comparison :—
| Province or District. | Number of adjudged Bankrupts, 1868-69. | Number of adjudged Bankrupts, 1869-70. | Increase. | Decrease. |
