NOTES.
Mongonui. Stormy, wet, and unpleasant weather usually, especially on 1st and 2nd, from S.W., with thunder on 1st. On 8th,
from N.E., with heavy rain. On 16th, thunder, with rain. On 22nd, strong S.E. wind, and rain. On 27th, strong N.W.
gale, with rain, thunder, and vivid lightning, changing to S.W. on 28th, and thunder; also, thunder on 29th, and rain.
Stormy from same quarter on 30th, with rain and thunder. Maximum rainfall recorded on 23rd, 2.29 inches. Prevailing
wind from S.W. Maximum temperature on 1st, 70.0.
Auckland. Wet unpleasant weather generally, but occasionally fine days. Stormy on 8th from N.E. Highest rainfall on 27th,
.981 of inch. Prevailing wind from S.W. Thunder and vivid lightning on 1st, with heavy showers of rain. Maximum
temperature on 1st and 7th, 64.8.
Taranaki. Unpleasant, dull, showery weather, and cold. Frequent rain. Maximum fall recorded on 1st, 1.23 inches. Heavy
rain registered on 16th and 17th. Winds moderate, and prevailing from S.E. Thunder on 13th and 27th. Maximum
temperature on 13th, 65.0.
Napier. Unsettled weather, but occasionally very fine and bright. Thunder storm on 1st. Greatest rainfall recorded on 30th,
1.46 inch. Prevailing wind from S., but moderate. Maximum temperature on 10th, 68.0.
Wellington. Wet unpleasant weather on 1st from S.E. Tolerably fine up to 7th, but damp and cold; light winds from N.W.
On 8th and 9th, wet and disagreeable; thick rain and foggy; light N.W. wind. 10th and 11th wet and unpleasant, and fog
on 11th; wind, S.W. Also, showery on 12th and 13th. Finer to 17th, but occasional showers and very damp; very light wind
from S.E. Changeable and unpleasant weather during remainder of month; frequent rain and light winds. Hail on 19th.
On night of 29th, strong wind from S.E., with rain, and very cold. Continued on 30th. Highest rainfall recorded on 1st;
for previous 24 hours, 1.200. Indicated maximum temperature on 7th and 10th, 59.5. Prevailing wind from S.E. Very
slight earthquake on night of 28th. Weather severe, and with a greater rainfall than the average for same month in
previous years.
Nelson. Dull gloomy weather prevailed, though at times very fine and bright. Heavy rain recorded on 2nd, 1.10 inch. Stormy
on 11th from N.W., and on 23rd from same quarter. Thunder on 26th and fog on 29th. Snow on hill on 23rd, 24th, and
25th. Prevailing wind from N.W. Maximum temperature on 11th and 13th, 63.0.
Christchurch. Very wet, cold, unpleasant weather throughout month, with only an occasional fine day. 21 days of S.W. wind,
but light. Greatest rainfall on 30th, 1.262 inch for previous 24 hours. Fog on 6th and 28th. Maximum temperature on
6th, 53.1.
Bealey. Fine clear weather generally, but very cold and severe. Small amount of rain. Maximum on 9th, for previous 24
hours, 1.320 inch. Snow on 19th. Five days of fog. Prevailing wind from N.W., and very light. Smart shock of earth-
quake on 22nd, at 3.16 p.m., S.E. to N.W., lasting 12 seconds. Maximum temperature on 10th, 53.8. Minimum tempera-
ture on grass, 4.4 below zero, being the lowest recorded at any station.
Hokitika. Fine weather for time of year. Hard frost towards end of month. Rain below average, and winds moderate and
prevailed from S.E. On 10th, strong wind with squalls of rain from N. Greatest rainfall recorded on 9th, 1.75 inch.
Fog on 6th. Maximum temperature on 1st, 59.4.
Dunedin. Generally fine and clear, but cold, during the month. Very slight rain; maximum recorded on 30th, .280 inch.
Foggy on 9th, 10th, and 17th. Winds moderate, and prevailed from W. Maximum temperature on 5th, 54.0.
Southland. Very fine calm weather throughout, with slight rainfall. Maximum on 5th, 0.39. Sharp frosts. Prevailing wind
from E. Solar halo on 12th. Fine Aurora on 18th. Maximum temperature, 63.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Month marked by excessive rainfall in the north, the temperature being rather above the average. In the south and west
the rainfall was deficient and the weather more seasonable, with sharp frosts, S.E. winds predominating over the whole Colony.
