THE following Tables, showing the Numbers of the Population (exclusive of Aboriginal Natives) in the
Province of Nelson, the County of Westland, and the Province of Southland (as before Union with
Otago), as ascertained by a Census taken for the night of the 27th February, 1871, are published for
general information, in addition to similar Tables for Taranaki, Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Marlborough,
which appeared in the Gazette No. 27, of the 13th ultimo, for Canterbury, and Otago (as before
Union with Southland), which appeared in the Gazette No. 30, of the 27th ultimo; and for Auckland,
which appeared in the Gazette No. 31A, of the 1st instant. The figures, it is to be understood, are subject
to subsequent revision, but it is not probable that this will lead to any alteration of practical
importance.
