year, and three months' notice to those who may
have served for a longer period.
Writers will have no claim to superannuation, but
if incapacitated by age, illness, or accident, they will,
provided their conduct has been good and their
services have extended continuously over a period of
five years, be allowed gratuities at the rate of one
month's pay for each year's service, not to exceed
twelve months' pay on the whole.
Candidates are especially to understand that
Writers will not only have no claim to appointments
on the establishment, but will be ineligible for such
appointments, except under the 16th section of
"The Civil Service Act, 1866."

ENQUIRIES having been made respecting a person
named
JAMES EDWARD YOUNG,
formerly of 2, Perseverance Place, Coburg Road, Old
Kent Road, London, a Sailor by profession, and now
about 20 years of age, height 5 feet 6 inches, dark
eyes, and rather a broad nose, dark complexion and
dark hair. Last heard of in 1868, when he was
steward on board a vessel called the "Sarah," trading
between Australia and New Zealand. Any one who
can give any information respecting him is requested
to communicate with this office.

THOMAS SELBY TUCKER,
who joined the 2nd Waikato Regiment in 1863, and
was discharged in 1864, since when nothing is known
of him, any person who can give any information
respecting him is requested to communicate with
this office.

Tucker is about 36 years of age, of middle stature,
upright, good features, straight nose, brown hair,
light hazel eyes, looking grey. Has been sometimes
called by his second name, "Selby."

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Government of Victoria, is published for
general information.

SWAN SPIT SHOAL.
MASTERS, Pilots, and others are hereby informed that
a black buoy has been placed in twenty-one (21) feet
water at the S.E. end of the shoal which has recently
formed to the eastward of the Swan Spit. The fol-
lowing bearings mark the position of the buoy, viz.:-
High light at Shortland's Bluff in line with the
west end of Swan Spit Light, S.W. by W.
No. 12 Perch Buoy just open to the eastward of
the West Channel Lightship (swung to the
ebb). Swan Beacon W.IN.
The shoal, which has irregular soundings from
thirteen to seventeen feet, lies N.N.W. about one
cable length from the buoy, and is about half a cable
in width, having twenty-two feet water at its outer
or eastern edge.
