NOTES.
Mongonui.—Weather unusually fine; very slight rainfall, and light winds, which prevailed from N.W.
Auckland.—Fine, bright, warm weather; excessively dry; winds moderate, except on 19th and 28th, when it blew hard from S.
Prevailing wind from S.W.
Taranaki.—Pleasant weather; small rainfall; fresh southerly breezes frequently. Strong S.W. gale on 4th; also stormy on 28th
from S.E. Prevailing wind from S.W. Slight earthquakes on 3rd and 23rd.
Napier.—Tolerably fine weather, generally calm and close, but pleasant light showers at times. On 22nd and 23rd it blew hard
from N.W. Prevailing wind from N.E.
Wellington.—Wet and stormy on 2nd from N.W., beating rain; on 8th, strong N.W. wind; wet unpleasant weather on 12th
from S.E.; very stormy on night of 21st from N.W.; strong N.W. wind on night of 25th, and also on 26th; wind changed
on night of 26th to S.E., and brought heavy rain and wind; wet and unpleasant also on 27th from same quarter: otherwise
the weather during the month was remarkably fine, bright, and warm, with e ear sky, and bright mild nights. There were
eighteen days of N.W. wind. Slight earthquake shock on 3rd, at 2.15 p.m. Splendid aurora on 24th. Meteor observed on
night of 16th; very brilliant.
Nelson. Generally fine, bright, and warm, with little rain, and winds light. On 3rd it was stormy from S.W.; and on 23rd
from N.W. Prevailing wind from S.W. Earthquake on 3rd, at 2.18 p.m.
Christchurch.—On 4th it blew hard from S.W.; heavy N.W. gale on 8th, changing to S.W. and slight rain; also storm from
N.W. on 23rd, again changing to S.W. Otherwise weather very fine, bright, and pleasant. Prevailing wind from E.
Bealey.—Wet and unpleasant weather generally at this station, though at times it was bright and pleasant. On 4th strong S.W.
wind, with rain, thunder, hail, and snow; on 10th gale from N.W.; also strong N.W. wind on 17th, with rain and thunder;
on 21st stormy again from N.W.; heavy rain on 27th from N.W.; snow also on 12th. Prevailing wind from N.W.
Brilliant aurora on 24th.
Hokitika.—On 3rd and 4th stormy from S.W., with rain and thunder on 4th; also thunder on 5th; on 11th and 12th strong
N.E. winds, with heavy rain; on 22nd stormy from S.W., also with rain and fog; very heavy rain on 27th, wind N.; foggy
also on 15th and 31st. Very unpleasant wet weather almost throughout the month. Prevailing winds from N. and S.W.
Slight earthquake on 2nd at 2.30 p.m.
Dunedin.—Dry clear weather, but very stormy at times. On 5th and 6th strong S.W. and W. winds, with only slight rain;
also on 9th and 24th stormy from W., and on 28th from S.W.; thunder on 4th. Prevailing wind from W. Aurora on 24th, 25th, and 26th.
Southland.—Exceedingly fine weather, very dry, frequent strong winds from W. and N.W., but no heavy gales except on the
10th, when it blew hard from N.W. with rains. Prevailing wind from W.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Season all over the Colony much drier than usual, but in the Northern Provinces amounting to a positive drought.
