IN pursuance and exercise of the power and autho-
rity in this behalf enabling me, I, Sir George
Ferguson Bowen, the Governor of the Colony of
New Zealand, do hereby fix and appoint that Sittings
of the District Court of the Otago Gold Fields,
additional to those already appointed, shall be held
as follows:-

In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Lawrence,
on the second Tuesday in December next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Naseby, on
the second Wednesday in January next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Clyde, on
the Monday next after the second Wednesday
in January next.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court at Queenstown,
on the Monday second after the second Wednes-
day in January next.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the
Governor, this twenty-fourth day of Sep-
tember one thousand eight hundred and
seventy.

SIR,-With reference to the Circular Despatch
addressed to you on the 14th of March last, I
transmit to you herewith, by direction of the Secre-
tary of State, Copies of Instructions issued by the
Board of Trade to Officers in the British Possessions
abroad, with an amended form of Medical Scale
for the Merchant Ships, adopting the term "Essence
of Meat" for Essence of Beef, this form being substi-
tuted for Cancelled Circulars, Nos. 285 and 325.

INSTRUCTIONS TO OFFICERS IN BRITISH
POSSESSIONS ABROAD.
(Substituted for Cancelled Circulars, Nos. 285 and 325.)

Merchant Shipping Act, 1867.

MEDICAL SCALE FOR MERCHANT SHIPS.
THE annexed Scale of Medicines and Medical Stores
for Merchant Ships has been issued and caused to be
published by the Board of Trade.
The following portions of section 4 and section 5
of "The Merchant Shipping Act, 1867," refer to the
Scale of Medicines and Medical Stores, viz.:-

By section 4, paragraph 1, it is provided that "The
Board of Trade shall from time to time issue and
cause to be published Scales of Medicines and
Medical Stores, suitable for different ships and
voyages." By paragraph 2 of the same section it is
further provided that "The Owners of every ship
navigating between the United Kingdom and any
place out of the same shall provide and cause to be
kept on board such ship a supply of Medicines and
priate to the said ship." The concluding portion
of the same section sets forth that if in any
ship as aforesaid such Medicines [and] Medical
Stores" . . . . "as are hereinbefore required,
are not provided, packed, and kept on board as
hereinbefore required, the Owner or Master shall
be deemed to be in fault, and shall for each
default incur a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds,
unless he can prove that the non-compliance with the
above provisions, or any of them, was not caused
through any inattention, neglect, or wilful default on
his part;" and further, that "if in any case it is
proved that some person other than the Master or
Owner is in default".... "then such other person
shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty
pounds."

By section 5 of the Act it is provided that "Any
person who manufactures, sells, or keeps or offers for
sale, any such Medicines or Medical Stores as afore-
said which are of bad quality, shall for each such
offence incur a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds."

*Carbolic acid, liquid or crystal. A mixture containing in each 100 parts not less than 80 parts of Carbolic (or Phenic) and Cresylic Acids, and their Homo- logues; and not more than 20 parts of water gal.

Potassæ Tartras Acida Cream of tartar 2 oz.
*Condy's Crimson Fluid 1 pint
Epsom salts 3 lbs.
Essence of peppermint 1 oz.
Goulard's extract 1 oz.

Tr. Terebinthinæ Turpentine liniment 2 oz.
The solution of chloride 4 pints
of zinc
  • Omit extract of liquorice, and substitute aromatic spirit of ammonia,
    1 ounce to 1 pint of the mixture.
    † As an antiseptic and deodorizing agent for common use.
    ‡ For purifying drinking water when necessary.
    § Double the quantity above indicated to be taken to all tropical ports.
