  • From 1st of this month observations recorded at new Observatory, altitude 140 feet.

NOTES.

Mongonui. Generally fine weather. Strong E. wind on 6th and unusually high tide; strong N.E. wind on 9th, with rain and
thunder; on 16th strong N.W. wind, with thunder; and on 30th stormy from same quarter, also with thunder. Prevailing
wind S.W.

Auckland.-On whole fine pleasant weather during month. Stormy on 14th from W.; strong westerly wind on night of 26th,
with heavy rain and thunder. Prevailing wind from S.

Taranaki.-Pleasant weather at this station. Strong wind from S.E. on 4th and 5th, also on 14th from same quarter; on 27th
and 29th strong W. winds, with slight rain; fog on 1st. Prevailing wind W.

Wellington. On the whole very fine weather, rain below the average and winds moderate. It was stormy on 22nd from N.W.
and on 28th from same quarter, with rain; smart shock of earthquake reported at Wanganui at 2 a.m. on 26th. Prevailing
wind N.W.

Nelson. Strong wind from N. and N.E. on 11th, with rain; on 29th strong S.W. wind, with rain; otherwise weather tolerably
fine; rain rather below average; sharp shock of earthquake at 1.30 a.m. on 28th. Prevailing wind S.W.

Christchurch. Pleasant weather generally during month. Earthquake at 50 a.m. on 3rd and slight shock on 13th at night;
strong N.W. wind on 22nd, which shifted to S.W. and brought rain. Prevailing wind E.

Bealey. Very fine weather during the month, small rainfall and light winds; eighteen days of N.W. wind.

Hokitika. Strong winds at this station but small rainfall. On 11th strong S.W. wind, with rain; stormy from 19th to 23rd
from N.W., changing to S.W.; thunder on 19th and 22nd, not much rain; on 24th gale from S.W., with heavy rain; also
on 29th stormy from S.W., with showers and thunder and lightning at night. Prevailing wind S.W.

Dunedin. Unusually fine dry weather throughout the month. Prevailing wind N.E.

Southland. Fine weather at this station during month. Severe thunder storm on 10th, with heavy rain and vivid lightning;
also thunder on 21st; hail on 24th; nineteen days S.E. wind.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The weather for this month was unusually fine and pleasant throughout New Zealand, the rainfall being considerably below
the average, and the winds generally moderate, except on the West Coast of Middle Island, where strong S.W. winds prevailed.
