NOTES.

Mongonui.—On 1st strong westerly gale, with rain, hail, thunder, and lightning, and also on 24th from same quarter, with heavy
rain and thunder; on 27th and 28th strong N.E. wind, with thunder; thunder also on 5th, 9th, and 30th; fog on 29th.
Rain below average; very unsettled weather. Prevailing wind from S.W.

Auckland.—Very stormy on 1st from S.W., with much thunder and hail; heavy rain with thunder and hail on 3rd, wind S.W.,
and on 5th rain and thunder from same quarter; stormy again on 9th from S.W., with thunder; hail on 10th; very stormy
on 28th from N.; heavy rain on 30th; fog on 29th. Stormy and wet disagreeable weather generally during month. Pre-
vailing wind from S.W.

Taranaki.—Gale from N.W. on 2nd, and strong wind on 13th from S.E. Rather fine weather at this station. Prevailing wind
from S.E. Smart shock of earthquake on 7th, at 2.30 a.m., and slight one on 8th, at 2.30 p.m.

Napier.—Stormy on 1st, 3rd, and 4th from S.W. Fine dry weather in early part of month, but wet and cold during latter part.
Prevailing wind from S. and S.W.

Wellington.—Rather fine weather up to 8th, though stormy on 3rd from N.W.; but for the remainder of the month it was most
unsettled, occasionally tolerably fine during day but invariably wet at night; damp, unpleasant, and cold weather prevailed;
and the absence of the usual drying N.W. winds caused the wet to be more felt; the rainfall was below the average, though
there are greater number of rainy days. Hail on 9th; fog on 18th. Prevailing wind from S.E. Smart earthquake felt on
7th at 2:35 a.m., and several slight movements during day.

Nelson.—Fine weather at this station, with slight rainfall and light winds, chiefly from S.W.; thunder on 3rd and 4th; fog on
29th. Earthquake on 7th and 8th; smart shocks.

Christchurch.—Fine weather generally, with light winds, chiefly from S.W.; very cold at times.

Bealey.—Gale from S.W., with thunder and heavy rain, on 2nd; also on 3rd and 4th. Hail, rain, and thunder, and snow, on
4th; on 24th strong N.W., with thunder, snow, and rain; very heavy rain and snow on 28th from N.W.; fog on 15th,
27th, and 31st; snow also on 27th and 29th. The middle of month was fine, but during the early and latter part the wet
was excessive. Prevailing wind from N.W., generally light.

Hokitika.—Very stormy from N.W. from 2nd to 4th, with heavy rain and thunder, and strong S.E. wind on 29th, with rain
and thunder; otherwise the weather has been generally fine, with rainfall below the average. Wind moderate, principally
from S.E.

Dunedin.—Stormy on 5th from S.W., with slight rain, and on 15th strong wind from W. Hail on 12th; fog on 29th; dull,
cold, wet weather generally. Prevailing wind from W.

Southland.—Mild, but very rainy month. Hail, 4th and 5th; snow on 4th, but slight; strong wind on 27th and 28th from E.;
no gales or fogs. Prevailing wind from W.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The weather was generally wet, stormy, and severe; frequent storms, with thunder, hail, and heavy rain, occurred; on 7th and
8th an earthquake was felt at several of the stations. Tongariro reported active.
