NOTES.

Mongonui. Strong winds on 6th, 7th and 26th, from S.E., N.E., and N.W., heavy rain on 7th; thunder on 18th, and lightning
without thunder on 19th; fog on 16th; otherwise the weather was generally fine. Prevailing wind, S.W.

Auckland. Severe storm on 8th and 9th from N.E., with only slight rain; on morning of 8th the horizontal movement of wind for
24 hours previously was 1.070 miles; on 19th the weather wet and unpleasant, wind S.W.; heavy showers of rain on 27th
from S.W. Otherwise the weather was pleasant at this Station; rainfall below average. Prevailing wind from S.W.

Taranaki. Stormy on 3rd from W., and on 8th strong N.E. wind with rain; again on 19th stormy from N.E. with very heavy
rain; on 29th fog; on 15th and 26th the weather was generally wet, with strong winds, which prevailed from S.E. and S.W.

Napier. Strong wind on 25th from W., also on 30th from S., with heavy rain; rainfall rather lower than the average, and
temperature higher; sky generally clear and bright, and on the whole fine weather. Prevailing wind from S.W.

Wellington. On the whole the weather has been wet and unpleasant during the month, although at times bright and clear-stormy
on 15th from N.W., and on 24th from same quarter; strong S.E. wind on 28th and 29th with rain; fog on 11th. Prevailing
winds from N.W. Earthquakes on 3rd at 10 p.m., two very slight shocks; also slight shock on 25th at 8.32 a.m., lasting
three seconds. Aurora on evening of 3rd. High tide on 15th.

Nelson. Very wet weather during the month, but occasionally fine and bright; on 9th, 3.45 inches of rain registered for previous
24 hours, and strong from N.E.; on 16th heavy rain and wind from same quarter. Rainfall considerably above the average.
Prevailing wind from N.W.

Christchurch. Strong S.E. wind on 15th; very heavy rain on 19th and 20th from E., 1.600 registered on morning of 20th; on
22nd gale from S.W. with rain; fog on 8th. The weather was usually fine though rather dull; 15 days of S.W. wind.

Bealey. Gale on 3rd from N.W., and on 23rd strong wind from same quarter; very cold and severe weather generally; thunder
on 3rd, 15th, 16th, and 28th; 2.720 inches of rain recorded on morning of 16th; snow on 2nd, 3rd, and 23rd; fog on 4th,
5th, 6th, and 20th; 14 days of N.W. wind. Slight shock of earthquake on 21st, at 6.24 a.m.

Hokitika. Strong wind on 16th from W., with rain, thunder, and lightning; stormy on 23rd from S.W., with rain; strong S.W.
wind with rain and fog on 25th; thunder on 28th; foggy on 9th. On the whole, unpleasant, wet, and squally weather; 20
days of E. wind. Earthquake shock on 14th at 7 a.m., and very high tide.

Dunedin. Fine and pleasant in early part of month; very wet weather from 18th to 21st,-1.926 inches recorded on 20th for
previous 24 hours; on 22nd stormy from N.W.; the remainder of the month was generally fine; fog on 16th. Prevailing
wind from W.

Southland. Observer remarks weather generally fine, but at times damp and showery; on 15th barometer fell suddenly from
29.90 to 28.94, followed on 17th by heavy rainfall from S.E. and floods. Thunder on 2nd and 27th; hail on 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
and 22nd. Prevailing wind from W.

GENERAL REMARKS.

STORMY WEATHER generally during the month. The rainfall has been above the average. Active eruption of Tongariro, with
lava during this month.
