(a) It is certain that considerable changes in the distribution of Population in the Colony have taken place since December, 1867, but it is only when a Census is taken that any reliable numbers for the several Divisions of the Colony can be shown. The figures here given show the latest actually ascertained numbers. The estimated Population of the whole Colony in December, 1869, was 237,249, viz., 140,112 Males, and 97,137 Females.

(b) To make this Total agree with the number (218,668) previously published in the Tables of Census Results as the Population of New Zealand, in December, 1867, it is necessary to add the Population of the Chatham Islands, viz., 184.
