NOTES.

Mongonui.-Remarkably fine weather, small rainfall, and light winds. Thunder on 1st and 15th. Prevailing wind, S.W.

Auckland.-On 1st and 2nd, squally weather, with thunder and rain; stormy on 25th and 26th from W. and S.W., also on
30th from N., with heavy rain. Otherwise weather was generally fine. Prevailing wind from S.

Taranaki. Strong winds from 14th to 17th from S.E., without rain; also stormy from N. and N.W. from 24th to 27th, with
slight rain; heavy rain on 1st and 30th. Prevailing wind from S.E. Shock of earthquake on 4th at 4 p.m.

Napier. Cold changeable weather, and squally; wet during latter part of month. Stormy on 11th from S.W.,-on 24th, 25th,
and 26th from N. and N.W.,-on 27th from S.W., and 30th from N.E. Prevailing wind from S.

Wellington. On the whole unpleasant weather during the month, with frequent rain, and generally cold and raw,-occasional
bright clear days. Strong N.W. wind on 23rd; snow and sleet on 27th; hail on 1st and 4th. Prevailing winds from S.E.
and N.W.

Nelson. Weather generally fine, with light winds. Heavy rain registered on 10th, 24th, and 30th; strong winds on 7th from
S.W., 11th from N.E., and 16th from N. Prevailing wind from S.E.

Christchurch. Wet and dull weather during greater part of month, and at times very cold. Winds moderate. Snow fell on 27th,
and hail on 1st, 4th, 26th, and 27th. There were some very fine bright clear days occasionally. Prevailing wind from S.W.

Bealey. Strong winds on 5th, 6th, and 8th from N.W., also on 19th, 24th, and 25th from same quarter, and heavy rain on
latter dates; snow on 1st, 4th, and 25th; hail on 25th; and fog on 13th, 14th, 18th, and 23rd. The weather was at times
very pleasant, and winds generally moderate. Prevailing wind from N.W.

Hokitika. Very heavy rain at this station. On 10th, heavy gale, with thunder and lightning and excessive rain, 5.59 inches
recorded for 24 hours, high flood in river; gale also on 24th from W., with rain, and on 26th from S., with thunder and
hail; thunder also on 1st; fog on 13th and 15th. Prevailing wind from E.

Dunedin. Generally wet and squally weather, and cold; rainfall considerably above the average for same month in previous
years. Stormy on 4th, 5th, and 6th from S.W. and W., also on 26th and 27th from same quarter, with rain; snow on 25th
and 26th; hail on 1st, 2nd, and 26th; fog on 18th. Prevailing wind from W.

Southland. Generally fine. Gale from W. on 5th and 6th, and on 25th and 26th from same quarter,-the latter with
thunder, lightning, and hail. Prevailing wind, W.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Severe weather for the season, especially in the southern parts of the Islands, where the rainfall was in excess of the usual
average. Electrical storms were general in the early part of the month, and from 5th to 7th brilliant Auroras were observed.
