NOTES.

Mongonui. Generally close sultry weather during month. Strong wind on 2nd from E.; stormy on 11th for short time from
N.E.; thunder on 17th, and foggy on three last days of month. Prevailing wind N.E.

Auckland. Very fine weather generally at this station, at times rather sultry. Heavy rain on 18th from S.W. Prevailing wind
from E.

Taranaki.--Strong wind from S.W. on 1st, and on 2nd stormy from S.E.; on 11th strong gale from N.E. with rain; wind
changed to S.W. on 12th-still stormy; on 21st strong westerly wind. Otherwise the weather was very fine, with an
unusually small rainfall. Prevailing wind from W.

Napier. Remarkably dry weather at this station, very sultry and oppressive, with strong winds. On 15th and 16th stormy
from S.W.; strong winds from 20th to 22nd from N.W., and changed to S.W. on 22nd. Smart shock of earthquake on
12th. Prevailing wind from N.E.

Wellington.--Stormy on 10th from N.W., with rain continuing all night; strong wind on 19th and 20th from same quarter, but
only slight rain; again stormy from N.W. on 23rd and 24th-no rain. Very small rainfall, and fine and pleasant weather
on the whole, with high barometer and bright clear sky. Prevailing wind N.W. sixteen days.

Nelson. Stormy on 8th from N.W., and on 11th strong wind from same quarter, with heavy rain; also on 20th and 21st high
wind from N.W., with rain. Otherwise weather very fine and pleasant. Prevailing wind from N.W.

Christchurch. Very fine pleasant weather almost throughout the month, with very low rainfall and light winds. The mean
temperature rather higher than usual. Prevailing wind from E.

Bealey. Very wet weather generally. On 11th 3.790 inches fell for previous twenty-four hours, and on 20th 2.010 inches; on
16th, 19th, and 22nd, it was very stormy from N.W. Rainfall considerably above average. Twenty-five days of N.W. wind.

Hokitika. Fine in early part of month. From 10th to 21st weather unusually wet and squally, with an occasional fine day; on
10th strong squalls with rain from N., and also windy from same quarter with heavy rain and thunder on 19th; on 20th
stormy and wet, with thunder from N.E.; fine weather during latter part of month; fog on 23rd. Prevailing wind from N.

Dunedin. Fine weather generally at this station-no strong winds. Heavy rain on 10th and 11th; thunder on 12th; hail on
15th. Aurora Australis seen on evening of 12th. Prevailing wind from S.

Southland. Very wet weather-the latter part of month was stormy. Gale from W. on 14th and 15th. Aurora Australis
on 12th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The weather during the month has been generally very fine, but rather sultry, with slight rainfall, and on the whole
moderate winds. The rainfall, however, in the South of the Middle Island, was excessive, but no severe gales are reported.
