Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in
pursuance and exercise of the said power and
authority in me vested in this behalf, do hereby
appoint
SAMUEL HEWLINGS, Esq.,
the person elected to be the Mayor of the Borough of
Timaru, to be a Justice of the Peace under the one
hundred and thirty-third section of "The Municipal
Corporations Act, 1867."
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir
George Ferguson Bowen, Knight Grand
Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same; and issued at
Wellington, this fourth day of January,
in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and seventy.

WHEREAS by "The Public Houses Act, 1868," it is
enacted that whenever the Colonial
Forces shall be employed for the purpose of sup-
pressing rebellion or other disturbances in any
part of the Colony, and shall be stationed at any
place near to or within such part, it shall be lawful
for the Governor from time to time by Proclamation
to declare that, from and after a day to be fixed
therein, such part of the Colony as shall be defined
in the Proclamation shall be a Proclaimed District
within the meaning and for the purposes of the said
Act, and thereupon it shall not be lawful for any
person, whether holding a license under any Act or
Ordinance regulating the sale of wine, ale, beer, or
spirits, or not, to sell or supply any wine, beer, or
spirituous or fermented liquor of any kind, without
the permission of such person as the Governor shall
from time to time appoint to grant permits for the
sale of such articles within such district:
And whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the
thirty-first day of December, one thousand eight
hundred and sixty-nine, His Excellency the Governor,
in pursuance and exercise of the powers and autho-
rities for that purpose vested in him, did proclaim
and declare that all that part of the Colony situated
in the Province of Auckland, and bounded as follows-
The sea coast, from the North Head of the Ohiwa
Harbour to Cape Runaway; thence a straight line
to the summit of Maungapohetu; thence a straight
line to the summit of Peke Peke; thence a straight
line to the commencing point at the North Head of
the Ohiwa Harbour-should, from and after the
tenth day of January, one thousand eight hundred
and seventy, be a Proclaimed District within the
meaning and for the purposes of the said Act:
Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
the Governor of New Zealand, in pursuance of the
power and authority for that purpose vested in me,
do hereby appoint
Lieut.-Colonel JAMES FRASER,
to be the person who may grant permits for the sale
of wine, ale, beer, or spirits within the said Pro-
claimed District.

WHEREAS by "The Volunteer Act, 1865," it is
enacted that the Governor may at any time
call out for actual service any Volunteer Corps, and
that every Officer and Volunteer belonging to any
corps so called out shall remain on actual service
until released by the Governor's authority: And
whereas by Warrant, bearing date the thirtieth
November, and fifth day of December, one thousand
eight hundred and sixty-eight, the Volunteer Corps
hereinafter named were called out for actual service,
and it is expedient to release them from such service:
Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise
of the power in me vested by the said Act, do hereby
release from actual service every Officer and
Volunteer belonging to the Volunteer Corps herein-
after named, that is to say:-
The Union Company, Rangitikei Rifle Volunteers,
The Royal Company, Rangitikei Rifle Volunteers,
The Turakina Rifle Volunteers,
The Featherston Rifle Volunteers,
The Greytown Rifle Volunteers,
The Masterton Rifle Volunteers,
The Wairarapa Cavalry Volunteers,
The Carterton Rifle Volunteers,
The Greytown Cavalry Volunteers,
The Napier Rifle Volunteers,
The Hawke's Bay Yeomanry Cavalry Volunteers,
and
The Turakina Cavalry Volunteers.

Waikouaiti, Otago. Received, 1st October, 1869.

(a.) From top of bag. -Contains arsenic (as 0.5)
in quantity; compares in colour with former sample
(No. 613); this, however, being a very pale yellow,
streaked with a darker yellow. Its reaction is also
alkaline.
