Colonial Defence Office,
Wellington, 22nd December, 1869.

HIS Excellency the Governor directs it to be
notified that the Queen has commanded the
Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies to con-
vey to him Her Majesty's ratification of the Order
of the Executive Council of New Zealand of 10th
March, 1869, instituting "a decorative distinction to
be conferred on members of the Militia, Volunteers,
and Armed Constabulary who may particularly dis-
tinguish themselves by their bravery in action or
devotion to their duty while on service;" and also
Her gracious desire that the arrangements made by
the Order in Council aforesaid may be considered as
established from the date of that Order (10th March,
1869) by Her Majesty's direct authority.

The Secretary of State further expresses his con-
fidence "that this announcement of the Queen's
pleasure will enhance the satisfaction with which this
decoration will be accepted and worn by those to
whom it has been or may hereafter be awarded."

be forwarded "via Brindisi;" and any Letters
or Newspapers specially directed "via Brindisi" will
be forwarded by that route.

The postage on Letters addressed to the United
Kingdom via Brindisi will be—
s. d.
When not exceeding half an ounce 1 3
When exceeding half an ounce and not
exceeding one ounce 2 6
When exceeding one ounce and not ex-
ceeding two ounces 5 0
and so on increasing at the rate of two shillings and
sixpence for every additional ounce or fractional part
of an ounce.

Newspapers will be liable to a charge of fourpence
for every four ounces.
